Comcast Art Scholarship T-Shirt Design Competition Winners Announced

Sandwich Student’s Winning Design in Comcast Art Scholarship T-Shirt Design Competition to be Printed on 2009 Pops by the Sea Commemorative T-ShirtZach Kremer, an East Sandwich resident and junior at Sandwich High School, is the winner of the Comcast Cape-Wide Student Art Scholarship Competition, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod announced today. Kremer’s winning design will be featured on the official Arts Foundation of Cape Cod T-shirt commemorating the 24th Annual TD Banknorth Annual Pops by the Sea concert on August 2, 2009.
“We are proud to provide scholarship funding to student artists and support their Middle and High school art departments to emphasize the importance of art education in our local schools,” said Mary McLaughlin, Area Vice President of Comcast’s Greater Boston Region, which sponsors the annual student art competition. “We are committed to investing in the communities we serve and are happy to congratulate this year’s winners.”
“These scholarships provide much-needed support to Cape Cod student artists and their schools’ art departments,” said Margaret Van Sciver, Arts Foundation of Cape Cod President. “We received a record number of extremely high-quality entries for this year’s art scholarship competition, and congratulate all who entered for their creative achievements.”
Zach Kremer and Sandwich High School will each receive a $500 cash prize for the winning design. Second place winner Cody Murray and his sponsoring art department at Falmouth High School will both receive $250. Third place winners Ciara McGraw Lewicki of Barnstable High School and Mary-Kathryn Cushing of Sandwich High School will each receive $100, and an additional $100 will be awarded to each of their schools’ art departments. Honorable mentions went to Kiana Suchecki of the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School and Steven Bucci of Sturgis Public Charter School. Each honorable mention winner and their school will receive a $50 prize. Special mentions went to Emma Crowley of Barnstable High School, Lucy Gorrill of Barnstable High School, Olivia Malone of Chatham High School, Kimberley Walker of Sandwich High School and Emma Anne Fahle of Wixon Middle School. All honorable mention winners and their respective schools will receive a $25 prize.
The students will receive their awards at a reception at the Cape Cod Times Production Facility on Independence Way, Hyannis on Wednesday, May 27 at 6:00 pm. The reception will also mark the unveiling of the commissioned painting for the 24th Annual Pops by the Sea concert by renowned Provincetown artist, Donald Beal.
The review committee for this year’s Comcast Student Art Competition included Marilyn Agulnick-House, Citizens Bank; Gayle Burgess Hans, Community Representative; Bill Doherty, Barnstable County Commissioner; Daniel Fontneau, Actor; Chuck McLean, Hallsmith, SYSCO Food Services; Leanne Moulthrop, Resort and Conference Center at Hyannis; Mary O’Keeffe, Comcast; Betty Penn, Community Representative; Karen Ryder, Cape Cod Media Group; Lorraine Shepley, Shepley Wood Products; and Allen White, The Optimist Cafe.
The 24th Annual TD Banknorth Pops by the Sea concert will be held from 5 to 7 pm on August 2, 2009 on the Hyannis Village Green. The event marks the only Cape Cod appearance of Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra with special guest conductor Angie Dickinson. Proceeds generated by the concert support the programs of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.
