Jessica Burko presents Art as Medicine
I am beginning work on curating a new exhibition entitled, Art As Medicine: Artists Exploring Mental Illness. My plan is to include my own work in this exhibition along with the work of 4-8 other contemporary artists working within this theme. I have created a web page with information about the exhibition, a full show statement, and submission information.
If you or anyone you know creates artwork with the primary theme of mental illness (preferably their own illness or that of someone close to them) please direct them to the web site address http://www.artasmedicine.blogspot.com/.
WELSTAR
Fall Shows
WELSTAR a wellness day spa in Orleans, MA displays quarterly Art Shows featuring local artists. It has been open since Sept. 2006 and has showcased 3 shows so far. All have been received very well. This is not for profit, but to support the community artists. A win-win for everyone, as we get the pleasure of enjoying the work while it hangs here, and the artist gets exposure, and ideally sales. We feature an opening reception for the artist and the work hangs for 2-3 months to be enjoyed and viewed by patrons of the Spa. They are still looking for artists for the Summer and Fall shows. This will be ongoing, so ideally they will book shows out for at least a year in advance.

WRITERS ON THE TRAIN
Deadline: Currently – November 2007
Writers on the Train is organized by Boston-based artist Nance Davies, is a text-based, art project seeking your thoughts about [and while] riding the train. Poetry, prose, verse. Fiction or non-fiction. Just a few words - or up to 200. Create detailed descriptions or draw them into an imaginary scenario. Your writing may be included in one of several time-based art forms including: video, sound, book, and text installation in an art venue / format.
CONCEPT
In recent years, the ideas concerning ‘what art can be, where it should exist, how it should by made – by whom and for whom – have undergone radical changes. We no longer expect to find art only in museums and galleries, made by and consumed by an informed elite. Today art is off the wall, under the bridge, on the river, and in soup and conversation! Art moves, morphs, divides and multiplies as people from diverse walks of life, contribute to and inform our cultural production. Often artist and audience 'fuse' for purposes of creating a more authentic and empathetic voice.
The contemporary ‘T’ rider exists as a part of an atypical community shaped by social contingency, time / place fluctuations and indeterminate recurrences - a community transported by train and thought. This project does not assume to create community but rather to make visible, through writing, a kind of ‘already-existing-community’. Participating 'T rider/writers' are the collective makers of the work.
SITE [ trainSPACE & consciousnessSPACE ]
The project site is layered space. Specifically – the space of the train [literal / material] and the space of human consciousness [virtual]. Riders navigate and negotiate this shared space through carefully coded behavior – often retreating to private thought. Unlike car and bike navigation, which require concentrated skill and attention, this kind of travel allows the rider a temporary suspension in time and space - an interval of unscheduled consciousness. The project seeks to frame this temporary space as a place of potential, generative thought – a fluid place for imagination - a collective nervous system.
Finally, it is hoped that the writings offered by the riding community will offer an authentic, although partial, definition of the train riding experience through a diversity of perspectives –writings that reflect and critique the conditions of this mobile space where the rider is - at once - transported and transporting.
PROCESS
WRITE about your experience riding the ‘T’ subway train [and/or bus] [short pieces – 200 words max…..notes, diary entries, poems, prose]

Deadline: September 25th
Shimmering? Shining? Pulsating? Deep? Subtle? Bold? Brazen? Mysterious? Magnificent? Joyous?
Color takes on many forms! Color defines form. No matter how it is manifested, color is inescapable. Even black, the absence of color is color. Applied to materiality, it becomes an object. Applied to space, it creates being-ness. Correspondence and meaning of color has been a tradition in many of the world‚s spiritual paths, defining chakras, working with mineral energy, evenutilized in purely opportunistic means to provoke certain desired emotive responses. We are searching for various „spectrum‰ (pardon!) of experience with color and how it is utilized and expressed!
Participating artists will be selected by the Caladan Gallery staff, with one or more artists being awarded a solo exhibition. Artists working in painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital, textiles, mixed media, and installation are eligible. Video work cannot be accommodated at this time.
Caladan Gallery presents timely and relevant virtual exhibitions that are unique in concept and presentation. The exhibitions are very carefully juried and considered, each accepted artist tending to work within the parameters of the concept for each month. We also have affordable membership opportunities.
We are artist-friendly, keeping our fees and commissions as low as possible, doing extensive listings and fresh press releases monthly. We are averaging over 20,000 UNIQUE visitors each month and many artists have found expansive opportunities as a result of their exposure on the Gallery Site. Many artists have had the opportunity to exhibit at our physical sister gallery in Lawrence, Massachusetts, as well. We have been online since October of 2003, and have been extremely fortunate to create an exciting, diverse, and active meeting place for artists and viewers alike, creating a warm and positive virtual atmosphere. Barnstable Municipal Airport (HYA)— “Celebrate Cape Cod” Exhibit
Deadline: Friday, October 12 at 4:00 p.m.
Barnstable Municipal Airport (HYA) announces an exciting chance for Cape Cod artists, ages 18 and older, to display their talents for both travelers and area residents. The Airport, in cooperation with the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce and the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, is sponsoring a competition to create murals for the Airport’s four (4) new concrete security barriers, located in front of the Passenger Terminal on Barnstable Road. Amateur or professional artists, working alone or as part of a group, are encouraged to submit one design apiece for the barriers, each measuring 33 inches high by 10 feet long. With the theme of “Celebrate Cape Cod,” artists should plan a bright design that is two-dimensional, is visible from at least 15 feet away and contains no words or numbers. A jury of Cape Cod residents, engaged in various components of the arts, will select the winning designs and award a stipend to each winner (s). The murals will be unveiled at a ceremony in early November.
All artists who submit a design must be either year-round or seasonal residents of the Cape. Working on a primed white surface, with appropriate materials provided by the Airport, the artist/artists must be able to paint their designs “on site” and on dates to be determined - if their submission is one of the four selected by the competition jury. At the same time, the artists will be asked to paint the remaining three sides in a color that coordinates with their mural design.
Each entrant, or group of entrants, is encouraged to come to the Airport and view the barriers prior to creating their design. However, because of security considerations, artists must notify an airport official before taking any pictures of the concrete structures.
Entries must be submitted by Friday, October 12 at 4:00 p.m. to the Barnstable Municipal Airport’s Administration Office, on the second floor of the Passenger Terminal at 480 Barnstable Road in Hyannis. The Selection Jury will meet during the week of October 18, with winners to be notified immediately. The winning artists must be able to apply their designs, during a scheduled time slot, beginning October 22 through October 27.
Detailed rules for the competition, which include specifics such as size of submission, colors to be used, judging standards, airport-specific restrictions and where and when the entries should be delivered, as well as entry forms, may be obtained at the Airport’s Admin Office and on the website of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod: www.artsfoundation.org. For more information or additional questions, please call Betsey Sanpere at 508-221-2429.
