New Book is a 370 Anniversary Tribute to Reverend John Lothrop's Arrival
John Lothrop in Barnstable: A 370th Anniversary Tribute is a new book compiled by Sturgis Library Director, Lucy Loomis. The book was published
to coincide with the 370th anniversary of the Reverend John Lothrop's arrival in
Barnstable and the 365th anniversary of the construction of John Lothrop's
meetinghouse and is now available at the Sturgis
Library.

Art in Harmony at Cod Conservatory

The Cape Cod Conservatory's Art in Harmony exhibition will feature the pastel paintings of award-winning artists Phill and Merylle-Lee Thompson, along with Sterling Winds flute choir, January 8, 5 - 7 pm on the Cape Cod Conservatory, West Barnstable Campus.
Merylle-Lee Thompson is a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art, while Phill Thompson's work is in the permanent collection of the Cahoon Museum of American Art.
Sterling Winds flute choir features Sally Davol, Stacey Faris, Jeanne Giblin, and Mariellen Sears. All four women are public school teachers on Cape Cod. They have been playing together for the past five years.

Valery Thurber Featured at the Guyer Art Barn

Artist Valery Thurber is the featured artist at Guyer Art Barn now - January 30. An opening reception with live jazz will be held January 8, 6 - 8 pm.
This exhibition will include oils, woodcut prints, monotypes, and mixed-media. Ms. Thurber manipulates color and texture to take the imagery beyond representation towards an expressive style. Her subject matter includes the figure and simple still-life objects.

Burgess Birds at Green Briar Nature Center
Thornton W. Burgess Society opens the 2010 season at its Green Briar Nature Center with the Burgess Birds exhibit, January 9 - April. The opening reception is open to the public and will be held January 9, 1 - 4 pm.
The exhibition includes mounted bird specimens, information on how important protecting and studying birds was to Burgess and original illustrations of birds done for Burgess stories. Most of these pen-and-ink drawings by Harrison Cady have never been exhibited before and are part of a gift from Time-Warner Book Division.
Burgess Birds will be the first of six exhibits at Green Briar which pay tribute to Mr. Burgess and celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the publication of his first important children's book, Old Mother West Wind.
This exhibit is funded in part by a grant from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.

Creative Convergence: Renowned Painters Showing on Cape Cod

| The exhibition Creative Convergence: Renowned Painters Showing on Cape Cod is a collaboration between Cape Cod Museum of Art and Addison Art Gallery. The CMFA exhibition will be on view January 12 - February 28 with a reception on February 12, 5:30 - 7:30 pm.

filmArt@PAAM is screening the Jazz Age silent classic, The Crowd (1928), on January 7, 6:30 pm at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.
Shot on the eve of the crash of '29, The Crowd is a surprisingly relevant film that seems to foreshadow economic disaster. It is a tale of a promising young office worker's fall into alcoholism and poverty, and is one of the earliest Hollywood films to use German Expressionist style. A discussion will follow the screening.

Provincetown Counter Productions Presents The Elephant Man
The Elephant Man, presented by Provincetown Counter Productions, written by Bernard Pomerance and directed by Susan Grilli will open January 8 - 24, Friday - Sunday, 7:30 pm.
The play is based on the life of Joseph Merrick, who lived in London during the latter part of the nineteenth century. A horribly deformed young man, victim of rare skin and bone diseases, he has become the star freak attraction in traveling side shows.

Gift of the Magi is a play based on the short story by O. Henry. It tells the story of a struggling young couple spending their first Christmas together at the turn of the last century.

The Barnstable Comedy Club Presents First Night
The Barnstable Comedy Club will present First Night, by Jack Neary, January 14 - 16, 22 - 23 and 29 - 30 at 8 pm and January 17, 24, and 31 at 2:30 pm.
This romantic comedy features Danny Fleming and Meredith O'Connor, two somewhat lonely souls in their mid-thirties who encounter each other on New Year's Eve as Danny closes up the video store at which he works. He recognizes her as the girl he had a crush on in eighth grade - but who went on to become a nun. She remembers him and has wondered whether there might have been a different course for her life outside the confines of her convent.

CCMA Presents Art Visions: Cape Cod K-12 Students
Student artists steal the spotlight during Art Visions, a Cape-wide student art exhibition at the Cape Cod Museum of Art. This annual exhibition, featuring artwork created by Cape Cod students in grades K-12, runs now - January 17.
The exhibition represents a large-scale collaboration between the CCMA and schools from all over the Cape. Teachers choose up to four pieces of artwork created by students for this exhibition. The artwork, matted, framed and prepared for hanging prior to installation at CCMA, is a comprehensive selection of drawings, paintings, prints and sculpture that traces the creative development of young artists from the region.

Art Classes at the Guyer Barn
The Guyer Barn offers a variety of new and ongoing classes for both adults, teens and children. Classes include collage, painting and drawing, ceramics, painting in different mediums and levels, drawing from still lifes and from a live model, the sculpture-making processes and poetry. Artist Studio Workspace at the Shirley Blair Flynn Center
The Town of Barnstable is pleased to announce that there is an available artist studio workspace for rent at the Shirley Blair Flynn Center for the Creative Arts, which consists of a campus of town-owned properties providing artists living, working and gallery space at the corner of Pearl and South Streets.
Artists leasing the studio space are expected to promote the Center and participate in initiatives designed to involve the community in the arts, such as hosting open studio events or offering workshops and classes in their craft at the Guyer Art Barn. Selection will be made based on the prospective member's demonstrated willingness to contribute to the arts community.

- The Provincetown Theater Company is holding open auditions for its next production First Dance and for the February and March Winter Readings.
