The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod presents FIRST THINGS FIRST at the Cotuit Center for the Arts running now through February 6, thanks to the generous support of the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, the Donald C. McGraw Foundation and the Cape Cod Melody Tent. First Things First is open on Mondays through Saturdays, 10 am to 5 pm.
FIRST THINGS FIRST features the works of fifty-five established, well-known Cape Cod artists, as they share their explorations of the subjects that matter most to them in a wide variety of media. This major regional exhibit is a unique opportunity to enjoy the work of these outstanding artists under one roof - and it is free!
Keeping younger arts patrons in mind, art work is displayed at a height of 4 feet throughout the exhibit - right at children's eye level. A special mini-art library is available to all visitors, and a series of child-friendly events is scheduled over the course of the exhibit.
Gallery hours have been extended to accommodate the high demand for the show, based on advance bookings for school visits and the popularity of the Arts Foundation's three previously presented winter art exhibits: ROYGBIV in 2009, Self Portrait Cape Cod in 2008 and When We Were Younger in 2007. 15th Peace Week Poetry Contest Calling For Submissions
 Veterans for Peace Cape Cod Chapter invites submissions of poems to celebrate Peace Week, April 11 - 17. the contest is open to all Cape and Island writers. Winners will be selected from 14 categories, K - 12th grades and adults.
All entries must be received (not just postmarked) by 5 pm on April 2.

The Poetry Session at O'Shea's

Readings at the Fine Arts Work Center
The Fine Arts Work Center will feature readings by Greg Schutz and Margaret Reges, January 23, 8 pm.
Greg Schutz received his MFA from the University of Michigan, where he has also taught English and served as a Zell Postgraduate Fellow in Creative Writing. His first published story recently won the Juked Fiction Prize.
Margaret Reges is from Michigan. A graduate of the University of Michigan and the Iowa Writers' Workshop, her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Shenandoah and Cream City Review. She is a frequent contributor to All Music Guide, where she once worked as an assistant editor in the pop department.

In 2009, the Cape Cod Museum of Art accepted 146 works of art into its permanent collection. The Recent Gifts and Acquisitions 2009 exhibition which highlights these additions to the collection will be on view to the public January 23 - March 29. Some of the artists in this exhibition include Gladys Winn Dorfman; Varujan Boghosian; Richard DeQuattro; Arthur Diehl; Remo Farruggio; R. H. Ives Gammell; John Whorf and Peter Hunt.

Artist Valery Thurber is the featured artist at Guyer Art Barn now - January 30.
This exhibition will include oils, woodcut prints, monotypes, and mixed-media. Ms. Thurber manipulates color and texture to take the imagery beyond representation towards an expressive style. Her subject matter includes the figure and simple still-life objects.

The exhibition Creative Convergence: Renowned Painters Showing on Cape Cod is a collaboration between Cape Cod Museum of Art and Addison Art Gallery. The CCMA exhibition will be on view now - February 28 with a reception on February 12, 5:30 - 7:30 pm.
The CCMA will also host a Gallery Talk, February 12, 1 pm.
The associated exhibition at Addison Art Gallery in Orleans will be on view now - March 31, with an artists reception February 13, 5:30 - 7:30 pm.
Creative Convergence brings together, here on Cape Cod, 15 established landscape plein air artists from across the United States, Mexico, Ireland, Bulgaria and Russia, who, in the fall of 2009, met in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Burgess Birds at Green Briar Nature Center
Thornton W. Burgess Society opens the 2010 season at its Green Briar Nature Center with the Burgess Birds exhibit, now - April 30.
The exhibition includes mounted bird specimens, information on how important protecting and studying birds was to Burgess and original illustrations of birds done for Burgess stories. Most of these pen-and-ink drawings by Harrison Cady have never been exhibited before and are part of a gift from Time-Warner Book Division.
Burgess Birds will be the first of six exhibits at Green Briar which pay tribute to Mr. Burgess and celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the publication of his first important children's book, Old Mother West Wind.
This exhibit is funded in part by a grant from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.

 FilmArt@PAAM is screening The Edge of Heaven (2007), directed by Fatih Akin, January 21, 6:30 pm at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.
The Edge of Heaven weaves together the crisscrossing lives of several characters as they experience tragedy, sexual passion, and social tumult - most notably, a German mother (played by Fassbinder muse Hanna Schygulla), whose daughter becomes involved with a lesbian Turkish revolutionary, and a retired Turk living in Germany, whose educated son tends to his needs. A discussion will follow the screening; the popcorn is free.

Elements Theater Presents The Cherry Orchard
 The Cherry Orchard, by Anton Chekhov, will be preformed at the Elements Theatre, January 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31 on Fridays and Saturdays, 7:30 pm and Sundays, 3:30 pm.
Set in the early part of 20th century Russia, Chekhov's classic comedy The Cherry Orchard is the story of the tragic-comic events that take place in the household of Lyuba Ranevskaya. The descendants of an old aristocratic family, Lyuba and her brother Gaev cannot come to terms with the social and economic changes surging around them.

Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra Presents A Touch of Romance
 Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra presents A Touch of Romance performed at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center, January 23, 8 pm and January 24, 3 pm. Performed by Van Cliburn Gold Medalist winner, Jon Nakamatsu.
A legendary Russian composer and pianist who emigrated to America in 1917, Rachmaninoff wore his heart on his sleeve with unabashed passion. Rachmaninoff's Vocalise, a song written to be sung without words, garnered its popularity based entirely on its beautiful lyrical melodies and a lush romantic sound. Reflecting his Russian Romantic predecessors, Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 emanates an unending and gloriously rich flow of melodies that are collectively summed up in a grand and sweeping finale.

 The Barnstable Comedy Club will present First Night, by Jack Neary, January 22 - 23 and 29 - 30 at 8 pm and January 24, and 31 at 2:30 pm.
This romantic comedy features Danny Fleming and Meredith O'Connor, two somewhat lonely souls in their mid-thirties who encounter each other on New Year's Eve as Danny closes up the video store at which he works. He recognizes her as the girl he had a crush on in eighth grade - but who went on to become a nun. She remembers him and has wondered whether there might have been a different course for her life outside the confines of her convent.

Provincetown Counter Productions Presents The Elephant Man
 The Elephant Man, presented by Provincetown Counter Productions, written by Bernard Pomerance and directed by Susan Grilli will open now - January 24, Friday - Sunday, 7:30 pm.
The play is based on the life of Joseph Merrick, who lived in London during the latter part of the nineteenth century. A horribly deformed young man, victim of rare skin and bone diseases, he has become the star freak attraction in traveling side shows.

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Presents First Things First
First Things First, presented by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, is on display at the Cotuit Center for the Arts, now - February 6, open Mondays - Saturdays, 10 am - 5 pm.
First Things First features the works of fifty-five established, well-known Cape Cod artists, as they share their explorations of the subjects that matter most to them in a wide variety of media. This major regional exhibit is a unique opportunity to enjoy the work of these outstanding artists under one roof - and it is free!
Keeping younger arts patrons in mind, art work is displayed at a height of 4 feet throughout the exhibit - right at children's eye level. A special mini-art library is available to all visitors, and a series of child-friendly events is scheduled over the course of the exhibit.

 The Town of Barnstable is pleased to announce that there is an available artist studio workspace for rent at the Shirley Blair Flynn Center for the Creative Arts, which consists of a campus of town-owned properties providing artists living, working and gallery space at the corner of Pearl and South Streets.
Artists leasing the studio space are expected to promote the Center and participate in initiatives designed to involve the community in the arts, such as hosting open studio events or offering workshops and classes in their craft at the Guyer Art Barn. Selection will be made
