The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod presents FIRST THINGS FIRST at the Cotuit Center for the Arts running now through February 6, thanks to the generous support of the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, the Donald C. McGraw Foundation and the Cape Cod Melody Tent. First Things First is open Mondays through Saturdays, 10 am to 5 pm.

FIRST THINGS FIRST features the works of fifty-five established, well-known Cape Cod artists, as they share their explorations of the subjects that matter most to them in a wide variety of media. This major regional exhibit is a unique opportunity to enjoy the work of these outstanding artists under one roof - and it is free!

Keeping younger arts patrons in mind, art work is displayed at a height of 4 feet throughout the exhibit - right at children's eye level. A special mini-art library is available to all visitors, and a series of child-friendly events is scheduled over the course of the exhibit.

Gallery hours have been extended to accommodate the high demand for the show, based on advanced bookings for school visits and the popularity of the Arts Foundation's three previously presented winter art exhibits: ROYGBIV in 2009, Self Portrait Cape Cod in 2008 and When We Were Younger in 2007. For more information about the exhibit call 508-362-0066, email info@artsfoundation.org or visit www.artsfoundation.org.

Governor's Budget Calls for $9.4 Million for Massachusetts Cultural Council

MCC logo

Governor Deval Patrick this week released a proposed state budget for the coming fiscal year that calls for $9.4 million for arts and cultural funding through the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC). The Governor's fiscal year 2011 recommendation for the MCC represents a cut of just over $291,000, or three percent, from the agency's current budget. The new fiscal year begins July 1.

The release of the Governor's budget is the first step in the annual state budget process. The House and Senate will release their own budget recommendations in April and May, respectively. The two chambers must then agree on a budget before sending it back to the Governor for final approval.

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod joins the MCC in thanking the Governor and his Administration for its support of the MCC and the nonprofit cultural sector of Massachusetts. Investment in the cultural sector - even during these difficult times - is wise. Every dollar invested in arts and culture comes back fivefold to the Commonwealth in revenue from cultural tourism and jobs created.

Notably, the Governor's budget did not include funding for the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund. The Governor can invest up to $50 million in CFF through the issuance of state capital bonds over five years. Last year the Governor elected to issue $7 million to support the most recent round of CFF grants. This leaves up to $43 million to be issued for the program in future years if the Governor so chooses. The Massachusetts Cultural Council, which administers this program with MassDevelopment, has made continued state investment in the CFF a top priority.
