The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod is pleased to announce the schedule for the Third Annual Creative Collaborative Conference and Awards Reception on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at the Cape Codder Resort and Spa, 1225 Iyannough Road, Hyannis.

The creative community of Cape Cod will gather for a full day of presentations, panel discussions, displays, and activities to celebrate the best and brightest of the region's arts and culture, culminating in an evening awards reception.

Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Announces Spring 2010 Grant Deadline
Funding Available for Artists and Cultural Organizations

AFCC Fall GrantsThe Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, the designated local arts agency for Barnstable County, is pleased to announce its next grant cycle. Applications are now available for the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Spring grants cycle, which has a deadline of Friday, March 19, 2010.

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Grants Program provides cash awards to local artists and cultural organizations that are engaged in projects that help create a strong, stable, and diverse arts and culture industry on Cape Cod, and contribute positively to the quality of life and economic vitality of the region. Preference is given to specific program initiatives, particularly those enhancing the arts education of learners of all ages, and to collaborative efforts within the arts community.

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod will hold a grants information workshop for interested applicants on Thursday, February 25 at 5:30 pm at the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod offices in Centerville. First time applicants are strongly urged to attend this workshop. Reservations are required by February 24.

  • February School Vacation with the Cape Cod Coservatory: Children will have a blast during their February school vacation with Musical Theater Dance Workshop taught by Michele Colley and five different art classes with Nancy Pettibone. February 15 - 19.
  • MTDkids Workshop with Michele Colley, February 15 - 19, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. A performance-based workshop where kids learn the basics of singing, dancing, and art. Ages 6 - 12.
The Cape Cod Conservatory offers a variety of classes for students of all ages in art, music, dance, photography and early education for children. Students are being accepted now.

Charlie BrownEventide Arts Family Theater will present You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. This production is based on the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz, book, music and lyrics by Clark Gesner, February 11 - 21. Performances on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays take place at 7 pm and performances on Saturdays and Sundays at 2:30 pm.

You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown invites the kid in all of us into the world of Charlie Brown, his dog Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts gang for a fast-paced, lighthearted musical. This 1999 revised version of Charlie Brown won two Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards.

Counter Productions Presents Women Behind Bars

Women Behind BarsWomen Behind Bars, presented by Counter Productions, will open at the Julie Harris Stage in Wellfleet Harbors Actors Theater on February 12 - 28, Friday - Sunday at 7:30 pm.

Women Behind Bars was written by Tom Eyen and is directed by Patrick Falco. In this hilarious satire on B-movies of the 1950's, Mary Eleanor, an innocent duped into crime, lands in the Greenwich Village Women's House of Detention which is presided over by a massive matron with a taste for sadism and female flesh. Poor Mary Eleanor ends up hardened and cynical, but that's just the way it was in the movies.

Shelter from the Storm Concert

Shelter from the StormStudent artists from across Cape Cod will perform in concert to raise money for homeless veterans. This will be a showcase of high school talent, featuring 18 acts including singers, bands, dancers, and instrumental performers from high schools across the Cape.

The benefit concert will be held at Tilden Auditorium at Cape Cod Community College, Hyannis, on February 12, 7 pm. All proceeds will go directly to the Vietnam Veterans Outreach Center for Cape Cod and the islands.

Harwich Junior Theatre Presents Peter Pan and Wendy

Peter Pan and Wendy is a true play adaption by Doug Rand of J.M. Barrie's original novel. When the carefree and careless Peter Pan flies into the nursery of the Darling home, Wendy follows her instincts for adventure, bringing her little brothers along to magical Neverland. She takes care of the motherless Lost Boys but soon the Darling children are swept into Peter's battle with Captain Hook and his mostly-fearsome pirate crew.

Cotuit Center Concert Series Presents Greg Abate

Greg AbateGreg Abate, jazz saxophonist, flutist, composer, continues as an International Jazz/Recording Artist performing February 13, 8 pm, at the Cotuit Center for the Arts.

In the mid 70's after finishing a four year program at Berklee College of Music, Mr. Abate played lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra for 2 years. Greg recorded his first CD, Live at Birdland NYC, in 1991 on the Candid Jazz Label with the trio of James Williams, Rufus Reid and Kenny Washington. To this date Greg has recorded more than 12 other recordings and was nominated for a Grammy for his 2004 recording EVOLUTION in four categories. James Williams, Harvie S. and Billy Hart comprised the trio.

Decades into a legendary Met career, tenor Placido Domingo makes history singing the title role in Verdi's gripping political thriller, which is written for a baritone. Adrianne Pieczonka, Marcello Giordani, and James Morris are his co-stars in this moving and tragic story of a father and his lost daughter. James Levine conducts.

Legendary Scottish Singer Archie Fisher in Woods Hole

Archie FisherThe Woods Hole Folk Music Society continues its 38th concert series on Sunday, February 14 with a performance by Scottish singer and songwriter Archie Fisher. The concert takes place at 7:30 pm in the Community Hall at 68 Water Street in Woods Hole. Doors open at 7 PM.

Singer, songwriter and guitarist Archie Fisher is known as Scotland's foremost troubadour. His deep and gentle baritone, creative compositions and intricate guitar fingerpicking have earned him a place in the Scots Traditional Music Hall of Fame. In 2007 he was awarded the prestigious MBE (Member of the British Empire) medal by Queen Elizabeth for his services to traditional music.

Toast and JamMusic & More at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, February 14, 2:30 pm, features an afternoon with Toast and Jam. The trio, Tim Dickey, Julie Wanamaker and Laird Boles, together since 2008, composes and performs original bluegrass music. WHTC Presents Last of the Red Hot Lovers

The exhibition Creative Convergence: Renowned Painters Showing on Cape Cod is a collaboration between Cape Cod Museum of Art and Addison Art Gallery. The CCMA exhibition will be on view now - February 28. A reception will be held February 12, 5:30 - 7:30 pm, at the Cape Cod Museum of Art.

The CCMA will also host a Gallery Talk, February 12, 1 pm.

The associated exhibition at Addison Art Gallery in Orleans will be on view now - March 31. An artists' reception will be held February 13, 5:30 - 7:30 pm, at Addison Art Gallery.

Creative Convergence brings together 15 established landscape plein air artists from across the United States, Mexico, Ireland, Bulgaria and Russia, who, in the fall of 2009, met in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Castle Hill Gallery Host Haiti Benefit and Red Party Opening

In recognition of Black History Month, Cotuit Center for the Arts will present Soul Clap: Art in the Black American Tradition, February 13 - March 6. The exhibit will feature 6 diverse artists: Hartman Deetz, J. Vincent Diggs, Shea Justice, Carl Lopes, Robert Peters and Mwalim and explores the value of culture, worldview, history, myth and legend.

The opening reception will be held February 13, 4:30 - 6:30 pm will feature a live performance by digital media artist Mwalim.

A book reading and signing by Robert Peters, author of Da Goodie Monsta will take place on February 21, 1 - 3 pm in the gallery.

The Sweetest Thoughts, February 14 - March 3, opens at the Bowersock Gallery. A reception will be held February 14, 2 to 4 pm to celebrate the gallery's sixth year.

The Sweetest Thoughts will feature scores of artists and a broad variety of styles and mediums. It will also "take on" the topic of love - in all its guises.

There are oil works featuring swirling dancers, floating ethereal beings and strong, even harsh images of love lost. The show will feature sculptures of politically incorrect bedmates and images of love's struggles.

Burgess Birds at Green Briar Nature Center

Thornton W. Burgess Society opens the 2010 season at its Green Briar Nature Center with the Burgess Birds exhibit, now - April 30.

The exhibition includes mounted bird specimens, information on how important protecting and studying birds was to Burgess and original illustrations of birds done for Burgess stories. Most of these pen-and-ink drawings by Harrison Cady have never been exhibited before and are part of a gift from Time-Warner Book Division.

Burgess Birds will be the first of six exhibits at Green Briar which pay tribute to Mr. Burgess and celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the publication of his first important children's book, Old Mother West Wind.

Castle Hill Offers Throwing Workshop

Castle HillTruro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill is offering a winter throwing class taught by Linden Gray. The workshop will run for eight weeks beginning February. The clay studio is opened year round, and if you participate in this workshop you have access to the studio on Tuesdays and Thursday as well.

Linden Gray has been throwing pots for 9 year and holds a BFA from Alfred University. In her work, she is interested in the material nature of clay, which is often reflected in her wet altered work. Working primarily with functional forms, she is interested in exploring notions of use.

Call for Entries For Pastels Only on Cape Cod, 2010

Pastel Society logoFor Pastels Only on Cape Cod, 2010, sponsored by the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, will be held June 9 - 27, at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, South Yarmouth.

The deadline for entries (via digital image on CD) is February 12. Submission of entries to For Pastels Only is open to all artists. All work must be predominately soft pastel (at least 80%; no oil pastels). Paintings must be created within the last 3 years and not previously shown in a PPSCC exhibition or at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. Paintings allowed in this exhibition have a size limitation of 40" wide x 50" high, including frame.

The jurors for this national exhibit are both members of the Pastel Society of America. Margaret Dyer, who presented our 2009 Master Class, and Richard McKinley, who will present the upcoming 2010 Master Class will jury For Pastels Only and be the judges of awards.

Dune Shack Residency Applications Due February 15

Applications for residencies in the historic Fowler and C-Scape Dune Shacks in Provincetown for artists, writers and the general public are now available. The deadline is February 15, 2010, for residencies that run from April through November.

One residency includes a $500 fellowship for a visual artist, and there are two funded weeks for writers. The general public is encouraged to apply for this unique, primitive experience in the Cape Cod National Seashore.

  • Central Productions is proud to announce its annual open call for submissions to the 9th Annual Boston Cinema Census (BCC) hosted by the Brattle Theatre. Deadline is February 10.   • The Aesthetica Short Film Competition has been launched. Searching for filmmakers who are driving the genre of short film forward through inspirational and innovative works, the competition provides an opportunity for both new and experienced filmmakers to have their work broadcast to a wider audience. All genres of film are being accepted: drama, documentary, music video, animation, satire, comedy, artists' films and anything else you can think of. Films should be up to 20 minutes long.   • Call for entries for Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey Art Competition and Exhibition. All artistic skill levels are encouraged to enter. Robert K. Roark will give a painting demonstration at the Creative Arts Center, March 18, 10:30 a.m. - noon. Lunch included with ticket.

Mr. Roark received his formal training at the Art Students League of New York, the National Academy of Design, and the Cape Cod School of Art. He has been the recipient of a Ford Foundation Scholarship and the Kunyoshi Memorial Scholarship and has won numerous awards in both oils and pastels. His art work hangs in the permanent collection of the Hirschhorn Museum, Washington D.C., Cape Cod Museum of Art, Dennis, MA and the Cahoon Museum of American Art, Cotuit, MA

Cooking Series at Highfield Hall

The focus of these classes is to provide tips, techniques and shortcuts guaranteed to make you a better cook. The series is hosted by Gail Blakely, Personal Chef and Provisioner, and longtime food columnist for The Enterprise. Each class will introduce participants to local culinary experts.
  • Tapas on February 24, 2:00 pm and Canapés and Hors d'oeuvres on March 10, 2:00 pm. The course will combine both demonstrations and hands-on experience for those who so desire. All classes held on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and include recipes, menus, suggestions for wine and/or cocktails, and "small tastes."
