Call to Action to Include the Arts in the Economic Stimulus Bill

On the afternoon of February 6 the U.S. Senate, during their consideration of the economic recovery bill, approved an egregious amendment offered by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) that stated "None of the amounts appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act may be used for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, swimming pool, stadium, community park, museum, theater, art center, and highway beautification project." Unfortunately, the amendment passed by a wide vote margin of 73-24, and surprisingly included support from many high profile Senators including Chuck Schumer of New York, Dianne Feinstein of California, Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, and several other Democratic and Republican Senators.

If the Coburn amendment language is included in the final conference version of this legislation, many arts groups will be prevented from receiving economic recovery funds from any portion of this specific stimulus bill. It is clear that there is still much work to be done in the Senate and in the media about the role that nonprofit arts organizations and artists play in the nation's economy and workforce.

Arts advocates need to quickly contact Senators who voted for the Coburn Amendment and express disappointment with their vote. These Senators need to know that their vote would detrimentally impact nonprofit arts organizations and the jobs they support in their state. Americans for the Arts has crafted a customized message for you to send to your Senators based on their vote on the Coburn Amendment.

The Gershwin Brothers: Who Could Ask for Anything More

Robert Wyatt, Director of Music at Highfield Hall, will present a lecture, The Gershwin Brothers on Saturday, February 28 from 9:30 am - noon. This is the third in a series of Wyatt's lectures previously given at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., entitled The Golden Age of Broadway.

While the Gershwin brothers had stellar careers as individuals, they will always be remembered as the songwriting team whose works were synonymous with the sounds and style of what F. Scott Fitzgerald coined the "Jazz Age." From their first hit song in 1918, "The Real American Folk Song (Is a Rag)" to the heart-wrenching "Love Is Here to Stay," left unfinished by George's death in July 1937, the brother's legacy of two dozen scores for Broadway and Hollywood helped elevate musical comedy to an American art form.

Highfield Hall is located at 56 Highfield Drive in Falmouth. For more information or tickets call 508-495-1878 or visit www.highfieldhall.org.

In a successor to the 50 States Quarters Program, the U.S. Mint, in a nationwide program, has asked Governor Patrick to select one preferred and three alternate Massachusetts national sites to be featured on the reverse of a quarter. Beginning in 2010, the Mint will release five new quarter designs annually based on the order in which the selected sites gained federal designation. Governor Patrick is calling on the people of Massachusetts to help with this decision.

The sites for Massachusetts can include federally-recognized national parks or other national sites in the Commonwealth, including those appearing on the National Register of Historic Places, National Wildlife Refuges, and National Forests.

CCSO Brings Popular Music Listening Program to Cape Cod and Islands Schools

The Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra has signed an exclusive agreement with Tall Timbers Publishing Corporation of British Columbia, Canada, to implement The Brummitt-Taylor Music Listening Program: A Non-Directed Approach in Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket school systems for students K-6 as an integral part of its MusicWorks! Education Programs. MusicWorks! Everyday will be free to public schools in the region. Private schools are asked to pay a nominal fee. Sign-up begins February, 2009 with program implementation slated for September, 2009.

At a time when many education budgets are shrinking, this is a unique opportunity for students in participating schools to listen to classical music of all kinds and from different eras for five minutes at the beginning of the school day, five days a week, for five years. An emphasis on repeated listening to the same composition enables students to gain familiarity with some of the world's greatest music and learn about composers, historical setting and classical art form while improving their listening skills. And since the music has a calming effect, they also learn to sit still for longer periods of time and remain better focused in the classroom environment.

Schools interested in taking advantage of this unique opportunity to broaden their students' music listening horizons are encouraged to contact the CCSO immediately for complete details about the program and its many benefits. Contact Jerome Karter, Executive Director, 508-362-1185, ext. 103, jkarter@capesymphony.org or George Scharr, Director of Education, 508-362-1185, ext. 102, gscharr@capesymphony.org.
