AFCC Grant Deadline is Tomorrow
The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod's Grants Program provides cash awards to cultural organizations and local artists that are engaged in projects that help create a strong, stable, and diverse arts and culture industry on Cape Cod, and contribute positively to the quality of life and economic vitality of the region.
Preference is given to proposals that would enhance the arts education of learners of all ages on Cape Cod, and to collaborative efforts within the arts community. The AFCC does not award grants for general operating expenses. The Board of Directors will consider a limited number of awards up to $5,000, but because the AFCC is interested in supporting as many worthwhile endeavors as possible, grant size is generally limited to within a range of $500 to $2,500.
Arts Foundation of Cape Cod grants are awarded twice a year. The next deadline for applications is February 27 at 5:00 pm. Guidelines for grant applications are available at www.artsfoundation.org/AFGrants.html or by calling the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod at 508-362-0066.

The Gershwin Brothers: Who Could Ask for Anything More

While the Gershwin brothers had stellar careers as individuals, they will always be remembered as the songwriting team whose works were synonymous with the sounds and style of what F. Scott Fitzgerald coined the "Jazz Age." From their first hit song in 1918, "The Real American Folk Song (Is a Rag)" to the heart-wrenching "Love Is Here to Stay," left unfinished by George's death in July 1937, the brother's legacy of two dozen scores for Broadway and Hollywood helped elevate musical comedy to an American art form.

L.I.F.E. in the Abstract: An Exhibition at the Cahoon Museum Benefiting Living Independently For Ever
 |
Jake Rothenberg and Dr. Robert Gambone |
The Cahoon Museum of American Art is exhibiting L.I.F.E. in the Abstract now through March 8, with a lecture related to the exhibition on Tuesday, March 3.
Abstract Art is intuitive, reflective, spontaneous. In creating abstract art, elements of color, the art materials themselves, and the act of creating are central. Eight contemporary east coast artists demonstrate this process: Peter Arvidson, Vivian Bower, Karen Coill, Reese Inman, Mike Landis, Sky Power, Helen Shulman, and Mike Ware.
One gallery wall is reserved for work by students from LIFE whose abstract art affirms that all persons, regardless of physical or emotional ability, possess intuitive talent. The LIFE artists are: Elisabeth Bowman, Sandra deAlmeida, Annabel Gorman, Ei Mori, Kevin Nickerson, Jake Rothenberg and Mara Schusterman. Dr. Robert Gambone, exhibit curator and museum director, has highlighted the similarity of each LIFE artist's work to a major modern abstract painter.
For more information about the artists at LIFE, who are available for commissioned work, email Barbara Oliver at barbara@lifecapecod.org. The Cahoon Museum of American Art is generously donating 25% of all exhibition proceeds to LIFE.
The Cahoon Museum of American Art is located at 4676 Falmouth Road in Cotuit. For more information, or to register for the lecture, call 508-428-7581 or visit www.cahoonmuseum.org.
Higgins Gallery Exhibition Spotlights the Expanding Use of Reused/Recycled Materials in Fine Art
 |
Mike Big Blue by mike Wright
SWIMMERS by Keith Maddy |
Re:Configured exhibits the divergent styles and techniques of artists Ruth Daniels of Somerville, Damien Hoar de Galvan of Boston, Walter Kopec of Boston, Keith Maddy of Boston, and Mike Wright of Provincetown. Consciously manipulating color and form, the original materials used by these artists are often unrecognizable with echoes of its previous incarnation, hauntingly familiar but still unknown. Sometimes inspired by the visual qualities, sometimes by the chance to make political statements on consumption and materialism, these artists use a wide variety of materials, stripping them of their original purpose to find new imagery and meaning, including humor, satire and wit.

CCSO Brings Popular Music Listening Program to Cape Cod and Islands Schools
The Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra has signed an exclusive agreement with Tall Timbers Publishing Corporation of British Columbia, Canada, to implement The Brummitt-Taylor Music Listening Program: A Non-Directed Approach in Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket school systems for students K-6 as an integral part of its MusicWorks! Education Programs. MusicWorks! Everyday will be free to public schools in the region. Private schools are asked to pay a nominal fee. Sign-up begins February, 2009 with program implementation slated for September, 2009.
At a time when many education budgets are shrinking, this is a unique opportunity for students in participating schools to listen to classical music of all kinds and from different eras for five minutes at the beginning of the school day, five days a week, for five years. An emphasis on repeated listening to the same composition enables students to gain familiarity with some of the world's greatest music and learn about composers, historical setting and classical art form while improving their listening skills. And since the music has a calming effect, they also learn to sit still for longer periods of time and remain better focused in the classroom environment.
Schools interested in taking advantage of this unique opportunity to broaden their students' music listening horizons are encouraged to contact the CCSO immediately for complete details about the program and its many benefits. Contact Jerome Karter, Executive Director, 508-362-1185, ext. 103, jkarter@capesymphony.org or George Scharr, Director of Education, 508-362-1185, ext. 102, gscharr@capesymphony.org.
