Siobhan Magnus, 19, a 2008 Barnstable High School graduate and Marstons Mills resident is a semifinalist on FOX network's hit show, American Idol. Be sure to tune-in tonight, Thursday, March 4, 8 pm, to follow her progress and cheer her on.

Join the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod in supporting the very talented Siobhan Magnus, by voting for her each week. Just send a text message or cast your vote by telephone using the number displayed by Fox during Siobhan's performance. Viewers from all over the world are invited to cast their votes for their favorite contestants via text messages and phone calls after each week's broadcast. Last night viewer's were thrilled when Siobhan closed the show by belting out Think by Aretha Franklin to incredible acclaim. The judges were uniformly complimentary and described her as "bold and fearless" and "very, very talented" and gushed," Oh man, that was good!" after Siobhan performed.

Barnstable audiences have been fans of Siobhan since she first joined the Barnstable High School chorus, and was featured in a variety of BHS Drama Productions directed by John Sullivan, including Barnum, Fiddler on the Roof and The Wizard of Oz. Siobhan also performed with friends Ralph Bousquet, Matt Kohler, and Jordan Bonina in a local band called Lunar Valve, in a number of area venues.

Tony Award Winner Idina Menzel to Perform at Pops by the Sea

Idina Menzel will join the Boston Pops at the 25th Anniversary TD Bank Pops by the Sea concert on Sunday, August 1 on the Hyannis Village Green. This marks the Tony award winner's first appearance on Cape Cod. The 25th Anniversary TD Bank Pops by the Sea, presented by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, features the only Cape Cod appearance of Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and a yet-to-be announced celebrity guest conductor.

Ms. Menzel starred in Rent as Maureen and earned her first Tony nomination. Idina originated the role of "the green girl," the misunderstood witch in the hit musical Wicked, which included her show-stopping performance of the song Defying Gravity. In 2007, she rerecorded and remixed Gravity and the song went on to become a Top 5 hit on the Billboard Dance Chart. Her star turn in Wicked won her a Tony Award and huge critical acclaim. Other credits include two Drama Desk nominations for her roles in The Wild Party and See What I Wanna See at the Public Theatre. Last year, she opened and reprised her starring role in Wicked on the London stage. Idina's film credits include starring roles in the Disney romantic fable Enchanted, Rent and Robert Towne's Ask The Dust. Recently, Menzel joined the cast of Glee on Fox television.

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Grants Program provides cash awards to local artists and cultural organizations that are engaged in projects that help create a strong, stable, and diverse arts and culture industry on Cape Cod, and contribute positively to the quality of life and economic vitality of the region.

In recognition of the 75th anniversary of Porgy & Bess, Cotuit Center for the Arts will present Porgy & Bess: Music & Stories, four staged concerts featuring selected arias and ensemble pieces from the famous folk opera. Throughout the evening, Dr. Wyatt will also present information focusing on the historical and cultural significance of the opera.

The Woods Hole Folk Music Society Presents The Short Sisters

The Woods Hole Folk Music Society continues its 38th concert series on March 7 with a performance by vocal trio The Short Sisters. The concert takes place at 7:30 pm in the Community Hall in Woods Hole.

The Short Sisters are a New England-based singing group who have performed together since 1979. They sing mainly a cappella but also accompany themselves on guitar, autoharp and banjo.

Harwich Junior Theatre Presents Peter Pan and Wendy

Harwich Junior Theatre presents Peter Pan and Wendy, directed by Maura Hanlon, now - March 7. Performances will take place on Fridays at 7:30 pm, Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm.

Peter Pan and Wendy is a true play adaption by Doug Rand of J.M. Barrie's original novel. When the carefree and careless Peter Pan flies into the nursery of the Darling home, Wendy follows her instincts for adventure, bringing her little brothers along to magical Neverland. She takes care of the motherless Lost Boys but soon the Darling children are swept into Peter's battle with Captain Hook and his mostly-fearsome pirate crew.

Highfield Hall Presents a Screening of Beyond Belief

Beyond Belief a film by Beth Murphy and Principle Pictures will be shown at Highfield Hall on March 8, 6:45 pm, in honor of International Women's Day.

Beyond Belief is a film featuring Susan Retik and Patti Quigley, two ordinary soccer moms living in the affluent suburbs of Boston until tragedy strikes. Rather than turning inwards, grief compels these women to focus on the country where the terrorists who took their husbands' lives were trained: Afghanistan.

The Barnstable Comedy Club will present David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Proof, March 11 - 13, 19 - 20, 26 - 27, at 8 pm and March 14, 21, and 28 at 2:30 pm.

Proof is a story about human relationships, suggesting that developing trust and love can be as difficult, and just as uncertain, as establishing the truth of a mathematical proof.

Cosi Restaurant is exhibiting photographs by Woods Hole photographer Mark Chester, now - April 30. An opening reception will be held March 4, 4 - 8 pm. Cosi Resturant will hold its Community Benefit, 5 - 9 pm and as part of the opening reception a percentage of all restaurant sales will be donated to the Falmouth Artists Guild.

Mark Chester is a board member of the Falmouth Artists Guild. His photographs are in permanent museum collections. His black-and-white images from foreign travels and in the U.S. show people at work and in their daily lives.

Burgess Birds at Green Briar Nature Center

Thornton W. Burgess Society opens the 2010 season at its Green Briar Nature Center with the Burgess Birds exhibit, now - April 30.

The exhibition includes mounted bird specimens, information on how important protecting and studying birds was to Burgess and original illustrations of birds done for Burgess stories. Most of these pen-and-ink drawings by Harrison Cady have never been exhibited before and are part of a gift from Time-Warner Book Division.

Burgess Birds will be the first of six exhibits at Green Briar which pay tribute to Mr. Burgess and celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the publication of his first important children's book, Old Mother West Wind.

The artist-owned Gallery 31 opens its tenth year of the 2010 season with a freshly mounted display of stimulating and affordable fine art in its newly renovated space in the historic Old Post Office, now - April 30.

Four new partners have joined as the gallery celebrates its tenth year: Phil Bergson, oils; Susan Carey, pastels and acrylics; Arnie Casavant, oils and acrylics, and Jane Eccles, oils and pastels.

Poetry Out Loud Recitation Competition

Poetry Out Loud is the state semi-finals for a national competition, March 6, 1 - 5 pm, and will be held at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod.

This event will feature students from several local high schools. The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with State Arts Agencies to support Poetry Out Loud, which encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance.

15th Peace Week Poetry Contest Calling For Submissions

Vetrans for Peace, Inc. Veterans for Peace Cape Cod Chapter invites submissions of poems to celebrate Peace Week, April 11 - 17. The contest is open to all Cape and Island writers. Winners will be selected from 14 categories, K - 12th grades and adults.

The Guyer Barn offers a variety of new and ongoing classes for adults, teens and children. Classes include collage, painting and drawing, ceramics, painting in different mediums and levels, drawing from still lifes and from a live model, the sculpture-making processes and poetry.   • Painting the Portrait in Pastel with Alain Picard, April 17 & 18, 9:30 am - 4:30 pm. Working from the model, Alain will demonstrate a painterly approach to pastel. Students will then work from the model with individual instruction at their own easels throughout the afternoon.

Nominate Your Favorite Massachusetts Places

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod urges you to respond quickly to "1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts."

Your nominations are needed to ensure that the Cultural Treasures of Cape Cod are included!

This new cultural tourism program celebrates what is unique about our state, its communities, and its people, and stimulates cultural tourism. The program seeks to increase visitation to the state's wide range of exceptional historic sites, cultural venues, and natural landscapes.

Nominations will be considered for a final list of 1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts to be announced in May. The Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) has established a web site to accept nominations from the public: www.Massvacation.com/1000greatplaces. All Great Places that are nominated must be open and available to the public. Only one nomination per person will be accepted. The nomination period will close April 1, 2010. The Commission will meet later that month to draw up a final list of 1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts, which will be announced in May.

The 1,000 Great Places Commission was created by the Legislature in 2009. It is chaired by Eric Turkington of Falmouth, a former state representative and first House Chair of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Cultural Development.

On January 29, 2010, the Cape Cod Museum of Art purchased a Thomas Hart Benton lithograph, Island Hay. Thomas Hart Benton was an important realist painter of the regional school, a muralist, printmaker, teacher and writer. Island Hay will remain on exhibition for the foreseeable future.

  • The annual Giant Yard Sale of the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth (HSOY) will be held on March 20, 9 am - 3 pm, at the Yarmouth Senior Center, Forest Road, South Yarmouth. Many intriguing bargains are available (maybe an antique or two) in the event to benefit the research and preservation efforts of HSOY.   • Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod will be hosting its 1st Annual Mailbox Silent Auction on May 28, 5 - 8pm, at the Chequessett Club, Wellfleet and is looking for people interested in participating on the planning committee or sharing their artwork on a mailbox, The evening will feature a variety of uniquely designed mailboxes to bid upon. All proceeds from the event will be used to support Habitat's work and mission to work in partnership with families in need to build homes for the community.   • Alzheimer's Services of Cape Cod & the Islands, Inc. is pleased to announce its Cape-wide Arts & Alzheimer's Initiative, a series of moderated conversations stimulated by artwork for those with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia and their family caregivers. Free programs will be held several times each month in sixteen different galleries, museums and other venues beginning in January.
