March Declared Arts Education Month in Massachusetts

Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts has issued a proclamation declaring March as Arts Education Month in Massachusetts. Concurrently, the MA State Senate passed a resolution on March 1st celebrating Arts Education Month.

Communities are encouraged to support arts education and to plan celebrations, exhibits, and performances to celebrate and showcase the arts in Massachusetts.

Applications are now available for the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Spring grants cycle, which has a deadline of 5 pm, on Friday, March 19, 2010.

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Grants Program provides cash awards to local artists and cultural organizations that are engaged in projects that help create a strong, stable, and diverse arts and culture industry on Cape Cod, and contribute positively to the quality of life and economic vitality of the region.

Preference is given to specific program initiatives, particularly those enhancing the arts education of learners of all ages, and to collaborative efforts within the arts community.

Siobhan Magnus, 19, a 2008 Barnstable High School graduate and Marstons Mills resident continues to soar as a semifinalist on FOX network's hit show, American Idol. Follow her progress this evening, Thursday, March 11, 8 pm, and cheer her on as four more contestants are eliminated and the Top 12 are announced.

Tuesday night's viewers were dazzled when Siobhan sang House of the Rising Sun by The Animals. The judges responded to her performance by exclaiming "You are why I love music, I was captivated!" and "I love what you do" and complimented her song selection as "a brilliant choice."

25th Anniversary TD Bank Pops by the Sea Group Tickets Now on Sale

Pops by the Sea Festival Seating
Group tickets are now on sale for the 25th Anniversary TD Bank Pops by the Sea concert, which will be held on Sunday, August 1, 2010, on the Hyannis Village Green.

The annual concert is presented by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and features the only Cape Cod appearance of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra with conductor Keith Lockhart and a celebrity guest conductor to be announced. The Boston Pops will be joined by Tony Award winner Idina Menzel on the TD Bank Pops by the Sea stage in Hyannis.

Festival seating is available to groups of 20 or more individuals at a special discounted rate of $30 per person, which is 40% off the regular Festival seat price. All group seats offer excellent views of the stage and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. Help Raise Money for the Arts on Cape Cod

Nominate Your Favorite Massachusetts Places

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod urges you to respond quickly to "1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts." Your nominations are needed to ensure that the Cultural Treasures of Cape Cod are included!

This new cultural tourism program celebrates what is unique about our state, its communities, and its people, and stimulates cultural tourism. The program seeks to increase visitation to the state's wide range of exceptional historic sites, cultural venues, and natural landscapes.

Nominations will be considered for a final list of 1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts to be announced in May. The Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) has established a web site to accept nominations from the public: www.Massvacation.com/1000greatplaces. All Great Places that are nominated must be open and available to the public. Only one nomination per person will be accepted. The nomination period will close April 1, 2010. The Commission will meet later that month to draw up a final list of 1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts, which will be announced in May.

The 1,000 Great Places Commission was created by the Legislature in 2009. It is chaired by Eric Turkington of Falmouth, a former state representative and first House Chair of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Cultural Development.

The Barnstable Comedy Club will present David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Proof, March 11 - 13, 19 - 20, 26 - 27, at 8 pm and March 14, 21, and 28 at 2:30 pm. Featuring Hannah Van Sciver, Bobby Mangahas, Jessica Adams and Mark Bourbeau.

Proof is a story about human relationships, suggesting that developing trust and love can be as difficult, and just as uncertain, as establishing the truth of a mathematical proof.

Will's Wheels Concert

Will's Wheels, a local band concert at the Nauset Regional High School Auditorium will be held March 13, 7 pm. The concert is organized by Will Martell, an 18 year old senior at Nauset who lives in Brewster. Funds raised from the concert will benefit Martell's participation in the 545 mile AIDS/LifeCycle bicycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles in June.

The concert will feature many local bands and artists including The Rip-it-ups, Nauset World Music Ensemble and Anna Hirst. Additionally, The Sound, a newly-formed band comprised of sophomores at Nauset Regional High School will be making their debut performance.

The AIDS/LifeCycle bicycle ride is its 9th year bringing people from across the world to support AIDS & HIV prevention, testing, and treatment. Highfield Hall will present A Baroque Delight: The Loeillet Quartet on March 14, 4 pm. The performance will feature Elizabeth Doriss, oboe; Antoaneta Anguelova, violin; Irina Naryshkova, viola; and Michael Czitrom, cello.

Soloists from the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra have designed a special afternoon of chamber music. With selections from the vast repertoire of the baroque trio sonata as well as specially concocted arrangements for this unique orchestration, the Loeillet Quartet offers a fascinating afternoon of listening pleasure.

Cotuit Center for the Arts presents its 10th Annual Poetry & Chili Festival, March 13, 6:30 - 10:30 pm. The evening begins with the 2010 Great Chili and Cornbread Cook-off. Ribbons will be awarded for Best Chili and for Best Cornbread. Come early!

This year's poets are all local, and include the following award-winning participants: Christine Rathbun, Greg Hischak and Mary Kane. The Festival concludes with a performance by the Westland Trio, a jazz band. Amateur cooks of all ages may register as a Chili Chef or Cornbread Baker. Contestants are required to register in advance. The deadline to register is March 12, noon.

  • The Cape Cod Conservatory's West Barnstable Campus will host Great Women Artists of Orleans art reception on March 12, 5 - 7 pm. Artists include Joyce Aaron, Florence Adams, Rita Doddridge, Jane Eccles, Catherine Hertz, Diane Johnson, Martine Jore, Barbara Melcher, Matrie Morongell, Melora North, Phyllis Szerejko, Betty Twiss and Marge Uhl.
Pianist Jacqueline Schwab performs at the reception at 5:30 pm. Ms. Schwab has performed at the White House for President Clinton and also at the Smithsonian. The Fine Arts Work Center will present the art work of Sarah Peters, March 12 - 17, with an opening reception, March 12, 6 - 8 pm.

Sarah Peters graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003, a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania in 1996 and a Certificate in sculpture from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1995. In 2008, she completed a year-long Marie Walsh Sharpe Studio Fellowship. Sarah Peters is the recipient of three John Michael Kohler Arts/Industry Artist Residencies, the Emerging Artist Residency from Pilchuck Glass School, and the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation Grant.

The Cape Cod Maritime Museum opens its 2010 season with a new exhibit in the rotating gallery entitled Water, curated by Terry Gips. The exhibition features Cape Cod artists' interpretations of compelling and unique aspects of water in various media.

Also highlighted is an essay by Cape Cod maritime writer Sandy McFarland. The exhibit opens on March 16 - May 16. A reception for the exhibit will be on March 26, 5 -7 pm.

  • Places with Wind: Monotypes by Joyce Zavorskas, an exhibition/sale of about 15 recent works on view from March 16 - April 18 in The Little Gallery. In conjunction with the exhibition, Joyce Zavorskas will speak about her monotypes on April 6, 11 am.
  • A Natural Affinity, an exhibition running from March 16 - April 25, pairs painter Tracy Spadafora and sculptor Joyce Utting Schutter who are both inspired by nature, often taking organic forms as their starting point, then allowing their capricious imaginations full play.
  • Tuesday Talks by the artists are scheduled in conjunction with the Natural Affinity exhibition. Both presentations begin at 11 am. Tracy Spadafora will speak about her encaustic painting series Persistence of Nature, March 23. Joyce Utting Schutter will speak about her sculptures on view in A Natural Affinity, March 30.

  • Third annual Off the Wall fund-raising exhibit, March 19 - 22. The Grand Opening will be held on March 19, 5 - 7 pm, and is open to the public. Burgess Birds at Green Briar Nature Center

Thornton W. Burgess Society opens the 2010 season at its Green Briar Nature Center with the Burgess Birds exhibit, now - April 30.

The exhibition includes mounted bird specimens, information on how important protecting and studying birds was to Burgess and original illustrations of birds done for Burgess stories. Most of these pen-and-ink drawings by Harrison Cady have never been exhibited before and are part of a gift from Time-Warner Book Division.

Burgess Birds will be the first of six exhibits at Green Briar which pay tribute to Mr. Burgess and celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the publication of his first important children's book, Old Mother West Wind.

Titcomb's Bookshop will host a talk and book signing with Dwayne Raymond, author of Mornings With Mailer: A Recollection of Friendship, a memoir of his work with Provincetown's Pulitzer prize winning author Norman Mailer. The talk will be held on March 13, 3:00 pm and will be followed by a book signing.

Dwayne Raymond worked with Norman Mailer from April 2003 until Mailer's death in November 2007. He provided editorial assistance on Mailer's final four books. Raymond contributes regularly to the Huffington Post and has written for The New York Times Brief Guide to Essential Knowledge, The Mirror, In Newsweekly, and The Boston Reader. He was a writer and producer for the NBC daytime news magazine show Real Life and served as associate producer for MTV's Real World: Boston. He lives in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

  • Brian Booker is a fiction writer living in Brooklyn. His short stories have been published in Conjunctions, Epoch, One Story, Shenandoah, Tin House, TriQuarterly, and other magazines. He holds a Ph.D. in English from New York University.
  • Rebecca Lindenberg's poetry appears in Colorado Review, Denver Quarterly, Gulf Coast, POOL, Barrow Street, Western Humanities Review, and elsewhere. She is the recipient of the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Prize and a Tennessee Williams Scholarship to the Sewanee Writers Conference. She is currently completing a PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Utah.

  • Justin Lieberman will give an Artist Talk, March 12, 8:15 pm. Mr. Lieberman received his MFA in 2004 from Yale University. His work has been featured in exhibitions at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art; the American Folk Art Museum in New York and the McDonough Museum of Art in Youngstown, OH. His work is represented in the collection of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.
  • Gregory Volk will give an Artist Talk, March 17, 8 pm. He is a New York-based art critic and freelance curator. He writes regularly for Art in America, where he is a contributing editor, and his articles and reviews have also appeared in many other publications, including Parkett and Sculpture.

The West Yarmouth Library will host on the second Sunday of each month as we bring you a whole new way to enjoy and appreciate books.

This month's theme, on March 14, is Winds of Change. The stories being prepared are from wide a range of sources -- Alice Munro, William Faulkner, Virginia Wolff and others and reflect crucial moments of change and pressures that alter our lives. Selections will be read by Diane Quaid and Jan Anderson, both of whom are active in a variety of roles in the Cape theaters. This event is done in conjunction with Frank and Cara Watson of the Bluestone Actors Project, bringing live theater events to non-theater spaces. Doors open at 2:30 pm.

15th Peace Week Poetry Contest Calling For Submissions
