The Conservatory is Proud to Announce Its New Master Photography Series
 |
Peaked Hills by Jon Vaughan |
Throughout the year, at the West Barnstable and Falmouth facilities, the region's best photographers and their work will be featured. Each event will open with a lecture from the featured artist.
The inaugural show features the work of Master Photographer Jon Vaughan. Mr. Vaughan's work has been considered "the epitome of his craft" by appreciative audiences across the area. His lecture, followed by a wine and cheese reception, will be held on Saturday, March 21 from 4:00 - 7:00 pm, at the West Barnstable location.
Mr. Vaughan has written a book considered "the Bible" for area photographers: "Coastal Effects: Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket". In it he states: "When I do release the shutter, it is climactic. It means that I have documented a unique moment in a real place. Unlike painters and digital artists, I do not want the advantage of manipulation. For me the challenge of "straight" photography is creating art from fluid moments and found subjects. The necessary requirements are a good eye, good lenses, a good printer and good luck. Often the satisfaction is discovering the extraordinary in the ordinary. Sometimes the thrill is recording the truly remarkable. Most times the reward is simply witnessing and sharing the experience."
The Cape Cod Conservatory Barnstable campus is located at 2235 Route 132 in West Barnstable, across from the Cape Cod Community College. For more information call 508-362-2772 or visit www.CapeCodConservatory.org.

Higgins Gallery Exhibition Spotlights the Expanding Use of Reused/Recycled Materials in Fine Art
 |
Mike Big Blue by Mike Wright SWIMMERS by Keith Maddy |
Re:Configured exhibits the divergent styles and techniques of artists Ruth Daniels of Somerville, Damien Hoar de Galvan of Boston, Walter Kopec of Boston, Keith Maddy of Boston, and Mike Wright of Provincetown. Consciously manipulating color and form, the original materials used by these artists are often unrecognizable with echoes of its previous incarnation, hauntingly familiar but still unknown. Sometimes inspired by the visual qualities, sometimes by the chance to make political statements on consumption and materialism, these artists use a wide variety of materials, stripping them of their original purpose to find new imagery and meaning, including humor, satire and wit.
Re:Configured runs now - April 9. On Friday, March 27 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm a Gallery Reception takes place in Higgins Gallery. Event is free and open to the public.

CCSO Brings Popular Music Listening Program to Cape Cod and Islands Schools
The Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra has signed an exclusive agreement with Tall Timbers Publishing Corporation of British Columbia, Canada, to implement The Brummitt-Taylor Music Listening Program: A Non-Directed Approach in Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket school systems for students K-6 as an integral part of its MusicWorks! Education Programs. MusicWorks! Everyday will be free to public schools in the region. Private schools are asked to pay a nominal fee. Sign-up has begun, with program implementation slated for September 2009.
At a time when many education budgets are shrinking, this is a unique opportunity for students in participating schools to listen to classical music of all kinds and from different eras for five minutes at the beginning of the school day, five days a week, for five years. An emphasis on repeated listening to the same composition enables students to gain familiarity with some of the world's greatest music and learn about composers, historical setting and classical art form while improving their listening skills. And since the music has a calming effect, they also learn to sit still for longer periods of time and remain better focused in the classroom environment.
Schools interested in taking advantage of this unique opportunity to broaden their students' music listening horizons are encouraged to contact the CCSO immediately for complete details about the program and its many benefits. Contact Jerome Karter, Executive Director, 508-362-1185, ext. 103, jkarter@capesymphony.org or George Scharr, Director of Education, 508-362-1185, ext. 102, gscharr@capesymphony.org.

- The Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism is interested in receiving information about any jazz concerts, events, and festivities that happen on Cape Cod over the course of the year. They have created MassJazz - a concerted, statewide marketing program to integrate a wide range of jazz festivals, performances, hotel and club venues, and educational facilities into a cohesive campaign. The goal is to make MassJazz a unique new tourism product that can be marketed to the travel and tourism industry on both domestic and international levels.
