Siobhan Continues to Win New Fans!

Cape Cod's own Siobhan Magnus is a a major contender to become the next American Idol on FOX network's season nine hit show.

This week Siobhan moved into the top ten as she commanded the stage while singing Stevie Wonder's Billboard 1973 No. 1 song, Superstition. Swaggering across the stage she belted out the song adding some scat before hitting her big notes. Her fans jumped to their feet for a standing ovation to cheer her on. "You should inspire all these kids,' Randy Jackson said while Ellen DeGeneres stated, "You're just so good!". The top ten participate in the Idol summer tour.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Harwich Junior Theatre

Harwich Junior Theatre presents The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, March 25 - April 18, Friday & Saturday, 7:30 pm, Sundays at 2 pm, plus Saturday, April 10 and 17 at 2 pm. (No show on Easter Sunday.) Directed and Choreographed by Terry Norgeot, Musical Direction by Robert Wilder.

This hilarious tale of overachievers' angst chronicles the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. Before the show four audience volunteers are recruited to participate on stage as guest spellers.

The Barnstable Comedy Club will present David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Proof, March 26 - 27, at 8 pm and March 28 at 2:30 pm. Featuring Hannah Van Sciver, Bobby Mangahas, Jessica Adams and Mark Bourbeau.

Proof is a story about human relationships, suggesting that developing trust and love can be as difficult, and just as uncertain, as establishing the truth of a mathematical proof.

Fundraiser Performance of Treasure Island for Cape Cod Maritime Museum

Treasure IslandCotuit Center for the Arts (CCftA) will host a public benefit performance of Treasure Island as a fundraiser for Cape Cod Maritime Museum (CCMM) on March 31, 8 pm.

A reception for Elizabeth Moisanand will be held at 6:30 pm. Ms. Moisanand will be signing Master of the Sweet Trade, her historical novel about Cape Cod's pirate Samuel Bellamy, Mariah Hallet and the Wydah. A portion of the proceeds from the book sales at this event will benefit the Cape Cod Maritime Museum.

CCftA will run regular performances of Treasure Island April 1 - 18.

Hit & Run History: The Columbia Expedition

Sturgis Library presents Hit and Run History's crew of Gumshoe Historians for a screening of their documentary on the Columbia Expedition and its commander, John Kendrick, March 30, 7 pm.

Built on the North River, Columbia was the first American ship to circle the globe. It left Boston in 1787, just weeks after the Constitution was signed. Its story, and those of its people, begins in New England. The hour and fifteen minute film will be followed by Q&A from the audience, and a description of how Hit and Run practices history.

Mr. Bollinger, born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, received his BFA in Painting and Creative Writing from the Kansas City Art Institute and his MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design.
  • Artist talk with Sarah Oppenheimer, March 26, 8 pm. The focus of Sarah Oppenheimer's work is the feedback loop between constructed spaces and pedestrian motion. She studies how the built environment and human behavior reciprocally impact each other; most recently, the way that sight lines through built space shape the visual progression of a body in motion.

Burgess Birds at Green Briar Nature Center

Thornton W. Burgess Society opens the 2010 season at its Green Briar Nature Center with the Burgess Birds exhibit, now - April 30.

The exhibition includes mounted bird specimens, information on how important protecting and studying birds was to Burgess and original illustrations of birds done for Burgess stories. Most of these pen-and-ink drawings by Harrison Cady have never been exhibited before and are part of a gift from Time-Warner Book Division.

Burgess Birds will be the first of six exhibits at Green Briar which pay tribute to Mr. Burgess and celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the publication of his first important children's book, Old Mother West Wind.

William Evaul studied painting and printmaking at Syracuse University School of Art, and Pratt Institute (BFA) with graduate seminars at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1981). He came to Provincetown in 1970 as a painting Fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center.

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod urges you to respond quickly to "1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts." Your nominations are needed to ensure that the Cultural Treasures of Cape Cod are included!

This new cultural tourism program celebrates what is unique about our state, its communities, and its people, and stimulates cultural tourism. The program seeks to increase visitation to the state's wide range of exceptional historic sites, cultural venues, and natural landscapes.

Nominations will be considered for a final list of 1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts to be announced in May. The Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) has established a web site to accept nominations from the public: www.Massvacation.com/1000greatplaces. All Great Places that are nominated must be open and available to the public. Only one nomination per person will be accepted. The nomination period will close April 1, 2010. The Commission will meet later that month to draw up a final list of 1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts, which will be announced in May.

The 1,000 Great Places Commission was created by the Legislature in 2009. It is chaired by Eric Turkington of Falmouth, a former state representative and first House Chair of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Cultural Development.

All proceeds from the event will be used to support Habitat's work and mission to work in partnership with families in need to build homes for the community.   • Alzheimer's Services of Cape Cod & the Islands, Inc. is pleased to announce its Cape-wide Arts & Alzheimer's Initiative, a series of moderated conversations stimulated by artwork for those with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia and their family caregivers. Free programs will be held several times each month in sixteen different galleries, museums and other venues beginning in January.   • Tutti Italiani will feature Michael Tucker, his wife and fellow actor, Jill Eikenberry. They will discuss Mr. Tucker's book Living in a Foreign Language: A Memoir of Food, Wine, and Love in Italy, along with their experiences in Italy, March 22. Tutti Italiani is a gathering for those who love Italy, meeting the fourth Monday of each month at 7 pm. - Table Francaise will gather for those who enjoy French culture and language, meeting the first Wednesday of each month at 6 pm.
