Advocate for the Arts, Humanities, and Sciences in Massachusetts

MCC logo
The Massachusetts Cultural Council's budget this year is less than $10 million, after a cut of nearly 25 percent last year. Public investment in the arts, humanities, and sciences in Massachusetts this year is less than half its level a decade ago.

Over the next two weeks the House Ways & Means Committee will develop its proposed budget for the coming fiscal year, which begins July 1. This is a pivotal time in the budget season for advocacy. The MCC is not asking for a monetary increase in this difficult environment, they are asking that the Legislature maintain its funding at $9.7 million.

So what can you do? Advocate to support the arts, humanities and sciences in Massachusetts. Visit the MCC's website now to learn how at www.massculturalcouncil.org.

Siobhan Magnus 4-6-10 photo by American Idol
Cape Cod's own Siobhan Magnus continues on in the top nine. On Tuesday's
FOX network's season nine hit show, American Idol, her fellow contestants described her as "amazing, weird, interesting, unique, and true to herself."

On this week's performance
Siobhan Magnus sang a gentle and moving version of Across the Universe, a John Lennon written song, as a tribute to her sisters. Randy Jackson said he loved the "tender side" Magnus showed and Ellen DeGeneres said she "loved" the song. Kara Dio Guardi and Simon Crowell both said they enjoyed her style change.

Join the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod in supporting the very talented Siobhan Magnus by voting for her each week!

CCCMA and CCSO Reveal Plans to Merge

Unite4Excellence logo
The Cape Cod Conservatory of Music and Arts and the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra have announced plans to launch "Unite4Excellence," a capital fundraising campaign aimed at merging the two non profit organizations. The merger of these two arts organizations will create a stronger link between music performance and music education; a greater investment in music and arts programs for students of all ages; and an improved ability to further the cultural, educational, and economic interests of the region.

In order for the merger to take place by the target date of August 31, 2010, the CCCMA and the CCSO have agreed to raise $300,000 by June 30, 2010. Three local foundations have created a challenge grant of $100,000. The additional $200,000 must be raised through the "Unite4Excellence" capital campaign, with the merger contingent on a successful outcome. Once merged, the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra's name will remain the same and the Conservatory's new name will be the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra Conservatory of Music and Art.

The Honorary Chair of the Unite4Excellence Campaign Committee is Jung-Ho Pak, Artistic Director & Conductor, Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra. AFCC Board President, Margaret Van Sciver and AFCC Board members Daniel A. Wolf and Wendy Northcross are joining many others to co-chair this fundraising campaign.
