Titanic Visions: The Inventive and Rich Expressions of Mozart and Mahler

Rising from the Greek myth of love and tragedy, Mozart's Apollo et Hyacinthus portrays the spirited tone of young love and the soul-searching sadness of love lost. Remembered for its lyrical second movement which was prominently featured in the 1967 Swedish film, "Elvira Madigan," Mozart's Piano Concerto features piano writing that is unusually inventive and rich in fancy figuration. Pianist Adam Neiman plays with the exceptional virtuosity required for this technically demanding concerto. Sprightly tunes, waltz-like melodies and "terrifying shrieks" resound in Mahler's brilliant Symphony No. 1 (Titan).

Performances are on Saturday, May 2 at 8:00 pm and Sunday, May 3 at 3:00 pm at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center located at 744 West Main Street in Hyannis. For more information or tickets call 508-362-1111 or visit tickets.capesymphony.org.

Twilight on Old Dock Rd. by Priscilla Levesque

Priscilla Levesque of Cataumet is the featured Artist of the Month at the West Falmouth Library from now - May 9.

Priscilla paints landscapes of the Cape and Martha's Vineyard, using watercolor or casein. She does most of her work outdoors on location in order to capture the brief effects of light, weather and atmosphere. For example, she painted the accompanying image, Twilight on Old Dock Rd., in her car at the town dock in West Falmouth, working from late afternoon until dark. Later in her studio, she added final details from memory.

Priscilla's work is also displayed at Cape galleries, such as the Cataumet Art Center and Cape Gallery Framer in Falmouth.

The West Falmouth Library is located at 575 West Falmouth Highway in West Falmouth. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, Thursday 2:00 - 8:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. For more information visit www.priscillaart.com.

Rotary Club of Yarmouth to hold First Annual Street Art Festival at Cultural Center of Cape Cod

The First Annual Yarmouth Youth Street Art Festival, a project of the Yarmouth Rotary Foundation, will be held on Sunday, May 24 (rain day May 25) from 12:00 - 5:00 pm. Admission to the festival is free. There is no cost for participating artists.

Funded in part by a grant from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, the festival will invite groups of children from kindergarten through college to create original chalk art on the street and parking lot of the Cultural Center, while a group of high school and college students paint their creations on four junk cars, and children from kindergarten through fifth grade paint murals on a large van loaned for the occasion.

Demonstrations by professional artists including street artist Jason Robert LeClair from Providence, music, and refreshments. The festival is non-competitive. Local artists like Cristina Reverdy and Jackie Reeves will act as mentors to groups of student artists. There is currently no other youth street art festival in the mid-Cape area.

Teachers are encouraged to make this festival an art project in which their students can be involved. Local businesses and individuals will be engaged by Yarmouth Rotarians to sponsor one hundred or more 4x4 or 8x8 square foot "pavement canvases" and the vehicles on which the kids will make art.

The Cultural Center of Cape Cod is located at 307 Old Main Street in South Yarmouth. For more information about sponsorship opportunities, registering young artists for the festival, volunteering, or simply attending the event, visit www.yarmouthstreetartfestival.com.

Harwich Summer Arts and Crafts Festivals Under New Direction

After 10 years sponsoring the Harwich Summer Arts and Craft Festivals in Brooks Park, the Harwich Cranberry Festival Committee is taking over operations as well. Applications from artists and craftspeople for the shows, July 11-12 and August 8-9 are available.

The Committee is looking to support buy local/buy locally grown efforts. Priority will be given always to Cape and Islands artists, craftspeople and craft food producers and farmers. All items for sale must be handmade or grown by the exhibitor. Applicants will be strictly screened on this basis.

In discussions over a new direction for these weekend shows the committee decided it was a year to support our talented local artisans and in doing so add some flavor to the events by including our local farmers and food artisans. Information and applications for exhibit space are available from Harwich Cranberry Festival Summer, Crafts Registrar, P.O. 555, Harwich Port, MA 02646, by telephone at 508-527-7620 or by email at mcmanused@msn.com.
