Student Art Scholarship Winners Announced

Brian Young, a Falmouth resident and senior at Falmouth High School, is the winner of the Comcast Cape-Wide Student Art Scholarship Competition. Young's winning design will be featured on the official Arts Foundation of Cape Cod T-shirt commemorating the 25th Anniversary TD Bank Pops by the Sea concert on August 1.

Brian Young and Falmouth High School will each receive a $500 cash prize for the winning design. Both second place winners Annamarie Bartolozzi from Mashpee High School and Julia Massard from Cape Cod Academy will receive $250 and their sponsoring art department will receive $250 each. Third place winners Kiana Suchecki of Nauset Regional High School and Shaun Reidy of Falmouth High School will each receive $100, and an additional $100 will be awarded to each of their schools' art departments. Honorable mentions went to Waylan McGillis of the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, Ariel Sampou of Rising Tide Charter Public School, Hailey Johnson and Kathy Rodriquez both from Barnstable High School. Each honorable mention winner and their school will receive a $50 prize.

The students will receive their awards at a reception at the Cape Cod Academy at 50 Osterville-West Barnstable Road in Osterville on Tuesday, May 25 at 6:00 pm. The reception will also mark the unveiling of the commissioned painting for the 25th Anniversary TD Bank Pops by the Sea concert by renowned artist, Robert Douglas Hunter.

The National Guard is seeking actors to participate as role players for upcoming Exportable Combat Training and Capability, a massive exercise at Camp Edwards next month. Valbin Corp. has been hired by the Department of Defense and the company is looking for more than 100 role players and 30 truck drivers. Job requirements include being 18 + years old with no criminal history, being physically fit and willing to work in all types of weather.

On June 5, 2000 Massachusetts National Guard soldiers will have the opportunity to see what they might encounter in the war-torn countries of Iraq or Afghanistan by participating in the upcoming training exercise. Lt. Col. Jack McKenna stated that " The importance of having role players during training is so that soldiers get the experience of having to deal with civilians in the particular region." Role players are taught Iraqi and Afghan phrases and wear clothing from those countries leading realism to the training.

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod has opened Volunteer Registration for the 25th Anniversary TD Bank Pops by the Sea concert on Sunday, August 1 on the Hyannis Village Green. Volunteers will help set up before the concert, monitor parking lots, collect tickets, lead group tours, and much more.

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod is offering summer 2010 internship opportunities for current high school seniors interested in the arts or a non-profit career. The AFCC provides an ideal environment to learn about a regional arts agency that serves artists and arts lovers, cultural organizations and those that support them.

The AFCC 's high-energy environment is suited for multi-taskers dedicated to attention to detail and accuracy who want to spend all or part of their summer immersing themselves in the local art and cultural community that Cape Cod has to offer.

Interns will gain hands on experience with all aspects of projects, special events, exhibits, musical performances and the 25th Anniversary TD Bank Pops by the Sea concert with a celebrity guest conductor. AFCC interns will gain invaluable resume experience.

The 13th annual ArtWork exhibition, featuring work created by students and mentors from the Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket School-to-Careers Art Internship Program, is on display at Cape Cod Museum of Art now - May 30, with an opening reception on Thursday, May 13, 5:30 - 7:30 pm. The exhibition will highlight painting, sculpture, textile design and a variety of other media produced by students during their partnerships with renowned local artists.

The Cape Cod Conservatory will host an open house May 14, 9:30 - 11:30 am. Students work with Nancy Pettibone, one of the Cape's most popular children's art teachers. Children also receive music and dance/creative movement instruction from top-notch faculty. Most importantly, the school's academic program exceeds the new Kindergarten entrance standards.

Cape Cod Dance Center Presents Paquita

The Cape Cod Dance Center presents the Spanish ballet Paquita at the Lawrence School Auditorium on Saturday, May 22, 7 pm and Sunday, May 23, 2 pm. Students and alumnae from the dance center will be joined on stage by guest dancers, Elizabeth Stackhouse and Shane Farrell, to present the story ballet set in the Spanish valley town of Saragossa. As a matinee performance on May 22, 2 pm the center will present a collection of dances in lyrical, jazz, tap, hip hop and contemporary dance entitled Weather Forecast.

Academy Playhouse Auditions

Announce Capital Grant Opportunities




Two national funders are now offering opportunities for arts and cultural organizations to access capital grants. One is for pre-development phases of construction, and the other is for renovation costs and capital reserves. Please be aware that both funders are requesting pre-application letters of intent be sent in May.
  • The Ford Foundation Space for Change grants provide support for critical planning and pre-development activities that may precede partnering in or leading a facility project. Deadline for Letter of Intent: May 28, 2010.
The Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund is an economic stimulus program that invests in the planning, acquisition, rehabilitation, and construction of nonprofit and public cultural facilities in Massachusetts.

ArtistLink helps to create artist workspace and housing by providing technical assistance and marketing support to Massachusetts artists, developers, and municipalities.

MBL Seeks Vendors for Summer Craft Fairs

The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) is seeking vendors for two summer craft fairs it is sponsoring on July 16, and August 13, 8:30 am - 4 pm, in Waterfront Park, Water Street, Woods Hole. There is a $35 space donation for each date, payable in full with registration.

Past fairs have featured the work of fine artists and skilled artisans from surrounding communities and have included photography, jewelry, pottery, and sculpture.

Our Town Opening Night at the Provincetown Theater

The Persuasions
Cotuit Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the latest concert in the 2010 Art on the Walls, Music in the Halls music series: The Persuasions. On Friday, May 14, 8 pm. From their start as boys singing on street corners, schoolyards and the subway stations of Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn in 1962, The Persuasions have gone on to perform internationally as the acknowledged "Kings of A Capella."

Performances This Weekend at Highfield Hall

Highfield Hall hosts the New England Conservatory Jazz Trio on Friday, May 14 with a Master Class from 4 - 6 pm and concert at 7 pm. The trio consists of NEC students, Doug Pet, Andrew Mulherkar, and Michael Gleichman, who will perform an evening of jazz standards and original compositions. Presented as part of the Emerging Artists Master Class and Concert series. Free performance.

A concert featuring Lorna Jane Norris, soprano, accompanied by oboist Elizabeth Doriss, and Robert Wyatt on piano is presented on May 16, 4 pm. Music from both sides of "The Pond" is accessible to British soprano Lorna Jane Norris, an entertainer who specializes in songs written with English poetry. The program includes the zesty music of American composer Ned Rorem, selected solos of William Bolcom, and a medley of songs by George Gershwin.

The Extremes at The Academy of Performing Arts

Outer Cape Chorale Presents Concert for Haiti

The Outer Cape Chorale, Provincetown's 140-voice community chorus, will present a series of concerts called Concert for Haiti on May 21 and 22, 7 pm at the UU Meeting House Provincetown and May 23, 2 pm at Nauset Regional Middle School. The featured work will be the rarely performed Requiem in C Minor by Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842). Also on the program will be several folksongs from Haiti arranged by the Chorale's conductor Jon Arterton. A portion of goodwill offering proceeds will be donated to UNICEF's Haiti Relief Fund.

The exhibit starts from her student years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1949, and continues through her most recently-completed painting. On May 22, 7 pm Reyes presents Visible Sound, an event where painter and musician will transform the Highfield Theater into an artist studio. Musicians include Tony Lujan on trumpet, Victor Jones on drums, Joe Sinaguglia on bass, Alex Foster on sax, and Conrad Herwig on trombone.

Using alternative firing techniques, each potter has developed their own unique way of capturing the impressions of fire and smoke in their handmade ceramic vessels. Juried exhibition of works by Printmakers of Cape Cod on display now - May 30 with the Marcia Howe Collection of Printmakers of Cape Cod. Works in the exhibition feature printmaking techniques including woodcut, wood engraving, line cut, calligraphy, lithography, and intaglio printing.

The sculpture of Robert Marcus is on exhibition now - June 6. His work, highlighted by topologically interesting surfaces, ranges from wall reliefs of playful biomorphic shapes to life-sized bronze abstractions.

The Art of Cape Cod - 200 Years, on display now - January 2, 2011. The exhibition is drawn from the museum's collection and borrowed from local collectors. Of special interest is the work of Marcus Waterman (1834-1914).

Written by Tom Dunlop with photographs by acclaimed photographer Alison Shaw, Schooner takes the reader through the construction of Rebecca of Vineyard Haven, a sixty-foot wooden schooner designed and built by the Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway.

The three-day Herb Festival, held at the Green Briar Nature Center, takes place on May 14, 15 and 16, 10 am - 4 pm. On Friday is luncheon accented with herbs. The festival features special exhibits on the uses of herbs, wildflower garden walks and craft booths. PMPM and Truro Vineyards Host Celebration

Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum and Truro Vineyards will host a celebration on May 19, 5 - 7:30 pm, at Truro Vineyards, as part of the countdown to the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Pilgrim Monument. The limited edition Century Wine, which was blended and bottled in honor of the Monument's anniversary, will be presented. Live music by the steel drum band Magic of Steel will entertain guests and food and drink from local restaurant favorites including will be provided. Attendees will also have the opportunity to win raffle prizes, as well as discover firsthand the process that went into creating the limited edition wine.

First Annual Bass River Spring Stroll

Bass River Spring Stroll
The Friends of the South Yarmouth Library and Cultural Center of Cape Cod will hold the First Annual Bass River Spring Stroll on Saturday, May 22, 10:30 am - 3:00 (rain date: May 23). The event will start at the Cultural Center and include: a tour of nine beautiful gardens, each with a knowledgeable gardener and an artist at work; coffee, tea, and designer cupcakes; a painting demonstration 11 am - 2:30 pm by Suzanne Packer; a Garden Flea Market; a classic car display on the grounds of the Laurence MacArthur School; a wagon decorating contest for kids; and a shuttle running continuously from event to event. In addition, at 3:15 pm, at the Cultural Center, C.L. Fornari (a.k.a. "The Gardenlady") will give a presentation on "Garden Myths."
