Renowned artist Robert Douglas Hunter unveiled his commissioned painting for Pops by the Sea 2010 commemorating this year's concert, to a standing ovation and thunderous applause. The nine student winners of the Comcast Student T-Shirt Art Scholarship Competition were also announced at the reception. Each student received a scholarship award and Official Commendations from their respective State Senator and State Representative. The arts educators from each student's sponsoring school also attended and received matching scholarship awards to support their arts education programming throughout the academic year. The Arts Foundation extends its gratitude to Comcast for their longstanding philanthropic support of this valued arts education program, to Cape Cod Academy for graciously hosting us at their beautiful campus in Osterville, and to Casual Gourmet of Centerville for their delicious catering.

Volunteers will help set up before the concert, monitor parking lots, collect tickets, lead group tours, and much more.

Hyannis Harbor Art Shanties Open for the Season
The Harbor your Arts Artist Shanties at Hyannis Harbor/Bismore Park are open May and June weekends, 11 am - 5 pm and feature full season and weekly rotating artists. In addition to five full season artist shanties, there are two rotating shanties, which feature a new artist or group of artists each week.
The featured artist for this weekend, May 29 - 31, is Penny Haughwout who turns recycled sails into everything from shower curtains and wallets and wine totes to jackets and seabags. Also, Mentos will be on hand with his steel drums, Saturdays, 2 - 4 pm in May and June.

Cape Cod Museum of Art Selected to Participate in Blue Star Museums
The Cape Cod Museum of Art will participate in Blue Star Museums, a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts in which more than 600 museums across America will be offering free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2010.
Blue Star Museums will run from Memorial Day, May 31 through to Labor Day, September 6, 2010. The Cape Cod Museum of Art will start the program on May 28, 2010. The free admission program will be available to active duty military and their family members, including active duty Reserve and active duty National Guard. Free admission with a valid military ID will include up to five guests.
This is the latest National Endowment for the Arts program to bring quality arts initiatives to the military and their families. Blue Star Families raises awareness of the challenges and strengths of military family life with civilian community and leaders. Operation Appreciation is an initiative of Blue Star Families that seeks to connect military families to the larger community.

Photojournalist to Reveal the World Beneath the Cape's Waterlines
On Thursday, June 17 at 6 PM, award-winning photojournalist Ethan Daniels will speak at Barnstable's historic Sturgis Library about his newly released stunning book-length collection of underwater photography, Under Cape Cod Waters (Union Park Press, June 2010). Co-sponsored by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and the Cape Dive Club, the event promises to draw an eclectic group of nature lovers, artists, and hardy divers interested in taking the plunge into Cape Cod's brisk waters. A reception and book signing will follow the author's remarks and slideshow.
With brilliant photographs and a conservationists' appeal, Under Cape Cod Waters is a revelation about the variety of flora and fauna found in Cape Cod's aquatic ecosystems - and the important roles these plants and creatures play in maintaining the overall health of this cherished peninsula.

Saturday Morning Children's Musical Instrument Demonstration
Allegretto will hold a musical instrument demonstration on May 29, 11:15 am - 12:30 pm at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. Allegretto will show many instruments, perform a little piece (be it a duo or a solo or group piece) and then afterwards the kids get to come up and ask questions, maybe even try out the guitar, drum, fiddle or whichever instrument has caught their fancy.

Rotary Club of Yarmouth's 2nd Annual Youth Street Art Festival
The Rotary Club of Yarmouth's 2nd Annual Youth Street Art Festival is on Sunday, May 30, noon - 4 pm (rain date of May 31). The festival brings the artistic creativity of hundreds of young artists to the streets and parking lots of the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. The festival displays include: sidewalk chalk on pavement; car art where students paint junk cars; a van mural for groups of younger artists led by a local artist mentor.

Falmouth High School Senior Art Show at Highfield Hall

The Monthly Poets' Corner at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod will feature Rhode Island's Poet Laureate Lisa Starr on May 27, 7 pm. Hosted by Barry Hellman and Joe Gouveia.
Lisa Starr, Rhode Island's Poet Laureate, is a two-time recipient of the R.I. Fellowship for Poetry. In her capacity as Poet Laureate, Starr is generating writing circles among student and elderly communities around the state. She has also established poetry circles in hospitals, homeless shelters, prisons, and agencies for children and adults with severe mental and physical disabilities.

The Cape Cod Melody Tent box office opens for the 2010 summer concert season on Sunday, May 30, noon for in-person sales. Joining the Melody Tent staff for the opening day celebrations will be PIXY 103 radio with Julie Raynor broadcasting live from 11 am - 2 pm.

Dedication of the Shining Sea Bikeway Mosaic
The 20' x 4' Shining Sea Bikeway Mosaic will be dedicated on Sunday, May 30, 1 pm, under the Palmer Avenue Bridge. This piece represents more than 600 hours of work over 6 months by mosaic artists. It was It was designed by Erica Szuplat of Falmouth, and created by the Cape Cod Mosaic Workshop under the direction of Falmouth resident Jim Bowen.

Photography: By Way of These Eyes - The Sublime, Exotic and Familiar
will be on exhibition June 5 - August 8.
The Hyland Collection includes many of the iconic images of the early
1900s side-by-side with masters of the 21st century. Fifty-three
photographers are represented in the exhibition.
Seven Lively Artists: Plein Air Painting will be on exhibition at the Cape Cod Museum of Art June 5 - August 15, with a gallery talk with the artists on Sunday, June 21, 1 pm, and a reception on Thursday, June 24, 6 - 8 pm. Seven Lively Artists is a group of plein air painters from the Harrisburg, PA area who spend a week each summer painting on Cape Cod.

Anne MacAdam 60-Year Retrospective Exhibit at Berta Walker Gallery
Wetlands #4 by Anne MacAdam  | Berta Walker Gallery is pleased to present a gallery-wide retrospective exhibition of a selection of over forty paintings and drawings by Anne MacAdam now - June 13.
The exhibit starts from her student years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1949, and continues through her most recently-completed painting. Her subjects include the Provincetown dunes in winter and summer, the moors both in day and at night, the fields of loose strife, the yellow and reds of Fall in Vermont, soaring seagulls, and misty beaches.

Birdhouse Auction to Benefit Wellfleet Preservation Hall

Cape Cod Rhododendron Festival
A new event on Cape Cod this spring is a two-day Rhododendron Festival co-sponsored by Heritage Museums & Gardens and the Thornton W. Burgess Society. On Friday and Saturday, June 4 - 5, 10 am - 4 pm, six private homes in Sandwich, Cotuit and Osterville will open their gardens to the public. In addition to the garden tours, the festival will offer a rare rhododendron auction, plant sale, book signings, exhibits and lectures at both sponsor locations.
