The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod is pleased to announce that the 25th Anniversary TD Bank Pops by the Sea guest artist Robert Douglas Hunter's painting Pops by the Sea 2010, will be on display now - July 31 in the lobby of TD Bank at 307 Main Street in Hyannis.

Mr. Hunter's commemorative painting, Pops by the Sea 2010 is a harmonious combination of a landscape and still life that centers on a violin and a composite of a beautiful impressionistic Cape Cod landscape. Mr. Hunter expressed delight with the honor and stated "I felt quite thrilled when the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod asked me."

Mr. Hunter's exquisite work will be auctioned at a special reception on Saturday, July 31. Proceeds from the sale will support the annual program of work of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. Limited edition signed and numbered lithographs of Hunter's original work will be available during the TD Bank Pops by the Sea concert on Sunday, August 1 on the Hyannis Village Green. Thereafter, if available, signed and numbered lithographs may be purchased by visiting www.artsfoundation.org.

The 25th Anniversary Pops by the Sea concert, presented by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, is the only Cape Cod Appearance of the Boston Pops and conductor Keith Lockhart. Three of Cape Cod's most popular performing groups will open the 25th Anniversary TD Bank Pops by the Sea concert on Sunday, August 1. Stage Door Canteen, the Fred Clayton Blues Band and CrabGrass Bluegrass Band will perform from 1:15 pm to 4:00 pm on the Hyannis Village Green prior to the Boston Pops taking the main stage at 5 pm.

Proceeds from the annual concert support the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, Barnstable County's designated local arts agency. The Pops by the Sea concert marks the only Cape Cod appearance of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra with conductor Keith Lockhart, Tony-award winning performer Idina Menzel, and a special celebrity guest conductor, to be announced.

Tickets are now available for the 25th Annual TD Bank Pops by the Sea concert on Sunday, August 1, 2010. Festival Seat Tickets ($50) and General Admission Lawn Tickets ($15) are on sale online and by phone from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. CCCMA and CCSO Merger Offers Significant Benefits to Cape Cod

Cape Cod is poised to benefit from the anticipated upcoming merger of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra and the Cape Cod Conservatory of Music and Arts. Partnering together these cultural institutions are expected to further enhance Cape Cod's impressive regional reputation as a premier cultural destination.
With the merger the symphony will receive access to the conservatory's buildings and extensive acreage in West Barnstable and Falmouth, as well as its rosters of students and gifted instructors. The conservatory will receive the prestige of being affiliated with a highly regarded symphony orchestra and its visionary artistic director and conductor, Maestro Jung-Ho Pak.

The merger of the two organizations is being supported financially by a $100,000 challenge grant from several area organizations. The challenge grant is contingent upon another $200,000 being raised from the community by June 30.

Cape Cod Melody Tent Opens Box Office for 2010 Season

The Cape Cod Melody Tent Box Office opened their season on Sunday, May 30. Hundreds of fans eager to purchase tickets to their favorite concerts and comedy events started to line up hours before the noon opening. Tickets buyers were entertained and refreshments were provided to the patient patrons who waited for their turn at the box office window.

The 2010 season will feature a long list of events and renowned and celebrated performers, including comedians Cheech & Chong, the Cape Cod Irish Summerfest, comedian Brian Regan, Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson & Family, Boz Scaggs, B.B. King, Tony Bennett, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, the Beach Boys, and the Temptations & the Four Tops and many more. Larry Squire Retires from Prominent Banking Position

Larry Squire of Orleans celebrated his long and distinguished career in banking on Cape Cod at his retirement reception this past Thursday at the Orleans Inn. Mr. Squire most recently served as Co-President of TD Bank's Cape Cod region and for many years at its predecessor organization, Cape Cod Bank and Trust. Friends and colleagues from his nearly forty year professional career gathered to honor Mr. Squire and express their respect, admiration and appreciation for both his inspirational leadership and community service.

Mr. Squire continues to serve as Vice-President of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod's Board of Directors. His unyielding support, active involvement and commitment have been instrumental in guiding the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod efforts to strengthen and promote Cape Cod's arts and cultural industry throughout the year. The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod extends its congratulations to Larry and looks forward to his continued commitment to the Cape's vibrant cultural community.

Photojournalist to Reveal the World Beneath the Cape's Waterlines

On Thursday, June 17 at 6 pm, award-winning photojournalist Ethan Daniels will speak at Barnstable's historic Sturgis Library about his newly released stunning book-length collection of underwater photography, Under Cape Cod Waters (Union Park Press, June 2010). The evening promises to draw an eclectic group of nature lovers, artists, and hardy divers interested in taking the plunge into Cape Cod's brisk waters. A reception and book signing will follow the author's remarks and slideshow.

With brilliant photographs and a conservationists' appeal, Under Cape Cod Waters is a revelation about the variety of flora and fauna found in Cape Cod's aquatic ecosystems - and the important roles these plants and creatures play in maintaining the overall health of this cherished peninsula.

Auditions for Candide

CandideCounter Productions announces the final round of auditions for Leonard Bernstein's Candide on June 3, 7 - 9 pm. Prepare two songs (up tempo and ballad preferred).

Candide features a score by Leonard Bernstein. Part sophisticated operetta, part comedy, this irreverent satire is the musical expression of Voltaire's tongue-in-cheek send-up of optimistic philosophies.

Summer Art Classes at Three Fish & a Ram Community Art Center

Three Fish & a Ram
Three Fish & a Ram Community Art Center's summer class schedule for all ages is now available. Classes include Figure Drawing, Photoshop, Portfolio Preparation, Scratchboard, Cartooning and more.

Also offered is a special art program to all local teens in grades 7-12 from July 9 - August 6, 6 - 8 pm, on Mondays and Fridays. Students will have the opportunity to use a variety of mediums such as charcoal, watercolors, acrylics, pastels and mixed media/fiber art. The program will culminate in a student produced public art show and opening reception. Space is limited and registration must be received by July 2.

Understanding New England Gravestones and the Stories They Tell

The Friends of Cape Cod Museum of Art present Understanding New England Gravestones and the Stories They Tell by Laurel Gabel Monday, June 7, 1 pm. Reservations are recommended.

Laurel Gabel's presentation will provide an explanation of the symbolism and special language of gravestones and further explore the attitudes about death that these historic artifacts reflect. In addition to the presentation, there will be a display of rubbings created with foil and on paper by Judith Trainor who captures the imagery found on gravestones.

The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) is seeking vendors for two summer craft fairs it is sponsoring on July 16, and August 13, 8:30 am - 4 pm, in Waterfront Park, Water Street, Woods Hole. There is a $35 space donation for each date, payable in full with registration.

Past fairs have featured the work of fine artists and skilled artisans from surrounding communities and have included photography, jewelry, pottery, and sculpture.

Spring Playwrights' Festival at the Provincetown Theater

Artist Richard Pawlak's pieces are introspective yet approachable. His thick layers of paint are scraped away to reveal abstract shapes and scenes. Pawlak's paintings are created in gouache and acrylic; he is also beginning to explore multimedia techniques.

The Cape Cod Museum of Art presents The Christopher Hyland Collection of Photography: By Way of These Eyes - The Sublime, Exotic and Familiar will be on exhibition June 5 - August 8. The Hyland Collection includes many of the iconic images of the early 1900s side-by-side with masters of the 21st century. Fifty-three photographers are represented in the exhibition.

Seven Lively Artists: Plein Air Painting will be on exhibition at the Cape Cod Museum of Art June 5 - August 15, with a gallery talk with the artists on Sunday, June 21, 1 pm, and a reception on Thursday, June 24, 6 - 8 pm. Seven Lively Artists is a group of plein air painters from the Harrisburg, PA area who spend a week each summer painting on Cape Cod.

For the 14th year, the PPSC is sponsoring a national juried exhibition showcasing paintings in the medium of soft pastel, created by some of the country's most talented and renowned pastel artists. 90 pieces were juried in from almost 300 entries.

Michael Mazur is nationally recognized as a master of contemporary printmaking, especially in the medium of monotype. In the early 1990s, he launched the New Provincetown Print Project. Cape Cod Rhododendron Festival

A new event on Cape Cod this spring is a two-day Rhododendron Festival co-sponsored by Heritage Museums & Gardens and the Thornton W. Burgess Society. On Friday and Saturday, June 4 - 5, 10 am - 4 pm, six private homes in Sandwich, Cotuit and Osterville will open their gardens to the public. In addition to the garden tours, the festival will offer a rare rhododendron auction, plant sale, book signings, exhibits and lectures at both sponsor locations.
