The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod is pleased to have four college Interns supporting our professional staff this summer.

John Ryan will be attending Wesleyan University as a Freshman this fall in Middletown, Connecticut.

Kaitlin Ryan will be a Junior at Boston University studying Communication and Advertising.


Caroline Dorr will be a Junior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst majoring in Business Management with minors in English and Economics.

Kyla Woodhouse will be a Senior at Amherst College with a major in Anthropology.

On Thursday, June 17 at 6 pm, award-winning photojournalist Ethan Daniels will speak at Barnstable's historic Sturgis Library about his newly released stunning book-length collection of underwater photography, Under Cape Cod Waters (Union Park Press, June 2010). The evening promises to draw an eclectic group of nature lovers, artists, and hardy divers interested in taking the plunge into Cape Cod's brisk waters. A reception and book signing will follow the author's remarks and slideshow.

With brilliant photographs and a conservationists' appeal, Under Cape Cod Waters is a revelation about the variety of flora and fauna found in Cape Cod's aquatic ecosystems - and the important roles these plants and creatures play in maintaining the overall health of this cherished peninsula.

Volunteer NOW for Pops by the Sea!

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod has opened volunteer registration for the TD Bank Pops by the Sea concert on Sunday, August 1 on the Hyannis Village Green. Volunteers will help set up before the concert, monitor parking lots, collect tickets, lead group tours, and much more.

Please plan to attend one of the following volunteer training sessions on the Hyannis Village Green:

Tuesday, July 13 at 5:30 pm
Tuesday, July 20 at 5:30 pm

PLEASE plan to attend 30 minutes before the session begins to ensure a smooth sigh-in and registration process for all of our 2010 volunteers. Each session takes about one hour and each volunteer will receive their specific job assignments and important information about parking, volunteer benefits and more! All new and returning volunteers MUST attend one of these information sessions.

Three-Day Arts Alive "Spring Into Summer" Festival in Falmouth

Arts Alive
The three-day Arts Alive festival will be held June 18 - 20 on the Falmouth Library Lawn and on Shore Street Extension in Falmouth.

A three-day festival of the arts, kicking off with a Town Dance on Friday night with music by Groovy Afternoon, the Cape's Woodstock tribute band, at 7 pm. Saturday, 10 am - 9 pm and Sunday, 11 am - 5 pm there will be 50+ performances of music, dance, theater, film, spoken word, events for kids, and more. There also will be 50+ artists and craftsmen offering their works for sale, sidewalk chalk paintings, live sculpture, a caricaturist, art in the windows along Main Street and Trashformation: Disposable Truths a participatory installation by the Falmouth Climate Action Team. Saturday night from 6 - 9 pmM will be Rock Fest, three tents of music by local rock bands.

Summer Music And Arts Classes at Cape Cod Conservatory

Cape Cod Conservatory will be offering a new Summer Festival of week-long, half-day intensives in every music discipline from June 28 - August 27. Classes offered in strings, winds, brass, percussion, a cappella, Broadway or classical vocals. There will also be full programs in dance, including ballet at all levels, hip-hop and belly dancing. Art for all ages and pre-school summer program that rotates music, dance and art. Each week ends with a performance based on the week's work.

Summer Art Classes at the Cape Cod Museum of Art

This summer Cape Cod Museum of Art is offering a wide variety of adult classes and workshops, and art camp for children. Classes run June 28 - August 28.

Adult classes include a Painting Birds in Oil with Aleta Steward; Beginning Painting with Robert Roark; Wood Carving a Weather Vane with Eric Kaiser; and Plein-Air Landscape Painting with Julie Siler Olander.

Summer art camp sessions cover a broad range of methods and materials in classes such as Drawing and Printmaking; The Art of Animals; and Art of the Circus. Children's afternoon workshops teach the basics of drawing, painting, sculpture, bookmaking and collage. Some highlights are Sailor's Valentines, Castle Sculpture, and creating a Treasure Map.

Summer Art Classes at Three Fish & a Ram Community Art Center

Three Fish & a Ram
Three Fish & a Ram Community Art Center's summer class schedule for all ages is now available. Classes include Figure Drawing, Photoshop, Portfolio Preparation, Scratchboard, Cartooning and more.

Also offered is a special art program to all local teens in grades 7-12 from July 9 - August 6, 6 - 8 pm, on Mondays and Fridays. Students will have the opportunity to use a variety of mediums such as charcoal, watercolors, acrylics, pastels and mixed media/fiber art. The program will culminate in a student produced public art show and opening reception. Space is limited and registration must be received by July 2.

Alice Kociemba's recent poems and haiku have or will appear in the Aurorean, Bluelines, Plainsongs, Salamander, Slant, and Roanoke Review. She won an International Merit Award from the Atlanta Review (2008) for "Death of Teaticket Hardware", the title poem of her chapbook (2010).

On Friday, June 25, 5:30 pm, Books by the Sea will host Ellen Fitzpatrick at the South Yarmouth Library. For Letters to Jackie, Ellen combed through literally thousands of condolence messages sent by ordinary Americans to Jacqueline Kennedy following the assassination of her husband, President John F. Kennedy, in 1963. The first book ever to examine this extraordinary collection, Letters to Jackie presents 250 intimate, heartfelt, eye-opening responses.

MBL Seeks Vendors for Summer Craft Fairs

MBL
The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) is seeking vendors for two summer craft fairs it is sponsoring on July 16, and August 13, 8:30 am - 4 pm, in Waterfront Park, Water Street, Woods Hole. There is a $35 space donation for each date, payable in full with registration.

Past fairs have featured the work of fine artists and skilled artisans from surrounding communities and have included photography, jewelry, pottery, and sculpture.

A new show opens at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater featuring the work of Nancy Nicol and Sarah Riley and will run June 17 - 30, with an opening reception on June 17, 7 pm.

Artist and sculptor Nancy Nicol has been painting and exhibiting locally for many years. Nicol's oil paintings, abstract cartography, and folk art are in collections from the Keys to Anchorage.

Sarah Riley is a painter / printmaker who creates mostly figurative works in both mediums. The figures in her work come from photographs, which she manipulates and layers on the computer.

Balanced through Nature, a fine art exhibition at the Bowersock Gallery, features the florals of Dustan Knight and people and creatures of Erin McFarland. The exhibit opens with a reception on Friday, June 18, 7 - 9 pm and the show runs June 18 - 29.

Knight, a highly respected watercolorist, developed her approach to her medium by veering from its traditional use and taking it to large surfaces. McFarland's latest body of work was introduced in the previous Bowersock exhibition. Given the great response, the gallery decided to carry her over into the next exhibit as a featured artist.

The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum (PMPM) will hold an opening reception on June 18, 5 - 7 pm for its special exhibit 100 Views, 100 Years and the re-opening of its recently renovated Mayflower Room. The exhibit will run now - November 30.

100 Views, 100 Years features 100 images of the Pilgrim Monument over the past century, including artwork and decorative objects depicting the Pilgrim Monument. In addition to its display renovation, the Mayflower Room offers three new case exhibits.

Mayflower Heritage: Connecting the Generations Talk at PMPM

The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum will host Paul Bumpus, Historian General for the General Society of Mayflower Descendents, will talk on Mayflower Heritage: Connecting the Generations on Saturday, June 19, 1 pm.

In an illustrated lecture, Bumpus will discuss how to trace genealogy and give hints about which online sites are most useful and reliable. Bumpus will delve into the genealogies of early Cape Codders dating back to the 1600s while teaching modern techniques anyone can use to trace descent from the Mayflower Pilgrims as well as others.

Last in the Series of Culinary Class at Highfield Hall, Plus a New Series

Highfield Hall is holding the last class of the Gourmet to Go series of adult culinary classes on June 23, 1 - 3 pm. The class is designed around the theme "PIcnic on the Beach," but recipes, tips and packing ideas are all interchangeable. Gail Blakely, longtime food writer for The Enterprise, will provide recipes and suggestions for menus and presentation.

A summer evening program, "Tapas and Tastes" is on Wednesdays, July 23 - September 1, 5:30 - 7:00 pm, offering an informative and social exploration of summeer snacks, drinks and good company. Sessions begin with a brief description of the evening's tapas combinations, how to find, create and serve them.

The 2nd Annual Wellfleet Garden Tour, Inspired by Nature, is on Sunday, June 27, rain or shine. The garden tour is noon - 4 pm and reception at the Community Garden is from 4 - 6 pm.

Inspired by Nature, presented by Wellfleet Preservation Hall, is a self-guided tour of five gardens in the historic town of Wellfleet. The new Wellfleet Community Garden is included in the tour as a special feature. Master Gardeners and Bob Bergeron, a horticulturist from Snow's Home and Garden will be available to answer gardening questions.
