Citizens Bank Summer Concerts Series Begins June 29

Summer Concerts Series The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and the Citizens Bank Foundation will offer free, weekly outdoor concerts in seven Cape Cod towns this summer.  The highly popular Citizens Bank Summer Concert Series will be presented in Dennis, Eastham, Falmouth, Harwich, Hyannis, Mashpee, and Sandwich.  Check our website for the full schedule of performing musicians, or call 508-362-0066.

All concerts are free and open to the public.  Guests are encouraged to bring a beach chair or blanket to the concerts.  There will be no rain dates.

Training session dates for all Pops by the Sea 2009  Volunteers have now been scheduled. Please plan to attend one of the following volunteer training sessions on the Hyannis Village Green:

Saturday, July 18 at 10:30 am
Thursday, July 23 at 5:30 pm
 
Each session takes about one hour and each volunteer will receive their specific job assignments and important information about parking, volunteer benefits and more! All new and returning volunteers MUST attend one of these information sessions.

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod has opened volunteer registration for the TD Banknorth Pops by the Sea concert on Sunday, August 2 on the Hyannis Village Green. Volunteers will help set up before the concert, monitor parking lots, collect tickets, lead group tours, and much more.

The TD Banknorth Pops by the Sea concert is the only Cape Cod appearance of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra with conductor Keith Lockhart. This year's celebrity guest conductor is Angie Dickinson. Fall for the Arts: 3-Day Festival Highlights the Arts and Culture of Cape Cod

Fall for the Arts The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and Cape Cod VIEW Magazine are delighted to announce that the second annual Fall for the Arts Festival will be celebrated on the weekend of October 2-4.
 
Fall for the Arts promotes and celebrates the vibrant arts and culture of Cape Cod. Cape residents and visitors enjoy live music, delicious food and a spectrum of activities at hundreds of venues including museums, galleries, restaurants, libraries and parks.
 
In 2008 Fall for the Arts was launched in three towns - Falmouth, Hyannis and Dennis. This year, all fifteen Cape towns are invited to participate and showcase the unique artistic flavor and flair of their community.

Members of the Cape's creative community are encouraged to get involved with the Festival and take advantage of the rewarding opportunities available to Fall for the Arts participants. Pops by the Sea Commissioned Artwork on Display

Donald Beal The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod is pleased to announce that Harbor Song, the original painting by Pops by the Sea 2009 commissioned artist Donald Beal, is now on display in the lobby of the Centerville Branch of TD Banknorth. 

Mr. Beal's exquisite work will be auctioned at a special reception on August 1, 2009, and proceeds from the sale will support the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. Limited edition prints of the work will be available during the TD Banknorth Pops by the Sea concert, Sunday, August 2nd on the Hyannis Village Green.

Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing at CCftA

Much Ado About Nothing Cotuit Center for the Arts is proud to present Much Ado About Nothing, the comic battle of the sexes by William Shakespeare, directed by Toby Wilson. Mix scheming match-makers with scheming villains, a deluded constable leading a bumbling watch and wise-cracking, insult-hurling soon-to-be-in-love couple and you have Shakespeare's wittiest and funniest romantic comedy, Much Ado About Nothing.

The show runs June 25 - July 19, with performances at 8:00 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday matinee performances at 4:00 pm. There is no performance on July 4.

Poets' Corner Open Mic Night at the Cultural Center

Featured poet Hannah Van Sciver is the 2008 Cape Teen Poet Grand Slam Champion, the 2009 Cotuit Center for the Arts Slam Champion (featuring teens and adult poets), a finalist in the Massachusetts Poetry Out Loud Competition, and a featured poet at the 2009 Provincetown Poetry Festival. She is a student at Cape Cod Academy.

John Brown's Body at The Beachcomber

John Brown's Body On Friday, June 26 at 9:00 pm, progressive reggae band John Brown's Body performs at The Beachcomber.  JBB's last studio album Amplify, debuted at number one on Billboard's Reggae Chart, and made iTunes "Best of 2008" list.  JBB returns with Re-Amplify, a new release featuring six remixes of songs from Amplify, along with a new, previously unreleased track.  

John Brown's Body has gone through significant changes since the release of 2005's Pressure Points. Emerging from these changes, the band's current line-up is a focused, more experimental outfit than ever before, challenging the usual notions of contemporary reggae.

The Lyman-Eyer Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of new work by Deborah Barlow. The exhibition will be on view from June 26 - July 8. The opening reception will be held on Friday, June 26 at 7:00 pm.

Deborah Barlow's new work continues to explore the atmospheric qualities of layering the painting surface with powdered pigments.  Using a unique technique that she has been developing over the last 27 years, her paintings achieve dimensionality and depth without the use of traditional techniques of representation or perspective.

The Alden Gallery will present Linda Reedy, Anne Salas, and Mark Palmer: New Work, a three-person show of gallery artists, on Friday, June 26 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. The show will run June 26 - July 9.

Linda Reedy has been showing her work for about five years, but she has been painting for decades, having been an artist in residence at the Fine Arts University, in Hanoi, Vietnam, and a visiting artist at the Massachusetts College of Art, where she did graduate work. Anne Salas is a Cape Cod artist who unveils a new direction in her work, which has an early-modernist inflection to it; one piece was recently accepted into the collection of the Cape Cod Museum of Art. The abstracts and collages of Mark Palmer, a Buffalo, New York-based artist, focus attention on their layers of color and sense of veiled activity.

After 30 years at her beach front gallery location on Gosnold Street, Julie Heller has opened a second gallery space, "Julie Heller East" at 465 Commercial Street, directly across from the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.

Blooming Bids for Kids

The First Annual Wellfleet Garden Tour

PrezHall Five outstanding gardens of Wellfleet will be open to the public for the first time this year on Saturday, June 27 from noon - 4:00 pm (rain date June 28), offering visitors a rare chance to discover both intimate and sprawling gardens where perennials live happily beside cabbages and herbs. This back to nature event is presented by by Wellfleet Preservation Hall and Wellfleet Community Garden.

This self-guided tour offers a delightful afternoon to leisurely explore unique natural landscapes that feature feasts for the eyes and for the table.  Visitors can complete the experience with a refreshing Sangria reception offered from 4:00 - 6:00 pm.

Opening Reception for Master Photographer Alison Shaw

Alison Shaw The Cape Cod Conservatory's Master Photographer Series proudly announces the exhibit of internationally-recognized artistic photographer, Alison Shaw, of Martha's Vineyard at the Falmouth Cape Cod Conservatory at Highfield Hill.

The opening reception is on Sunday, June 28 from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. The artist will be present to discuss her work. The show will run June 28 - July 31.

Alison Shaw has called Martha's Vineyard home since moving there after graduating from Smith College in 1975. During that time the island has provided the primary inspiration and subject matter for her photography. The Alison Shaw Gallery, which Alison owns and runs with her partner Sue Dawson, is located in an old single-engine firehouse at 88 Dukes County Avenue in the heart of the Arts District in Oak Bluffs.

Aoife Clancy: A Celtic Concert, with Chuck Colley and Erik Wendelken

Aoife (pronounced Eefa) has been a featured soloist with orchestras such as the Boston Pops and Cincinnati Pops and, while performing with Cherish the Ladies, collaborated with the Boston Pops on their Grammy nominated Celtic album. Chuck Colley (guitar & vocals) has performed with many groups including the Chuck Colley trio with Chris Westerlund and Erik Wendelken, Bill Morrissey, Pierce Pettis and Bill Staines and at festivals including The Ossipee Valley Bluegrass Festival, Nectar Fest and The Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival. The museum proudly announces a new partnership with The Artful Hand Gallery.  Beginning July 1, The Artful Hand Gallery will have a new retail space at the CCMA, open daily during regular museum hours.  The Artful Hand Gallery is widely recognized for its collection of fine American crafts. The shop also specializes in art cards, stationery, and soaps and candles produced by artisans.  It maintains a collection of mirrors, calendars, furniture and objects for the modern home.

Unbroken Thread: Nature Paintings and the American Imagination
This exhibit of Philip Koch will be on display now - August 16. The works in this exhibition were created over the past seven years at various locations throughout New England as Koch followed in the footsteps of artists from the 19th century through the present.

Spirit of America Band Presents Exploration 2009

Exploration 2009 Exploration 2009 will be performed by Spirit of America Band on Wednesday, July 1 at 8:00 pm at Dennis - Yarmouth Regional High School. Admission is free.

Spirit of America Band breaks new ground, pushing beyond the boundaries of its traditional "field show" with Exploration. In this hour-long show the band combines music in motion, dance, full costumes, and set to tell the story of Annie Warren, a young photographer from the mid-West, who comes to New York City to make her way in life. When Annie loses her spark of inspiration - her stardust - she is taken on a fantastical journey, and meets famous explorers and historical figures who give her just what she needs to regain her integrity and purpose.

artSTRAND will launch its first-ever works on paper invitational, paperJAM. The work of more than 70 artists, including drawings and other works on paper from six important twentieth-century artists, courtesy of Acme Fine Art in Boston, will be displayed in the show, which will be on exhibit now - July 1.

A celebration of the process of drawing and working with paper as a creative act, a process, a search and a discovery, paperJAM is a survey of what is possible and what has been achieved in the world of artwork on paper, past and present. The artSTRAND members have focused on inviting talented emerging artists who are not currently represented in Provincetown galleries, as well as well-established and historic artists, to participate in the show.

The Brewster Ladies Library will exhibit Landscapes by Daniel Springer from July 1 - 15, with an opening reception on July 3 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm. Springer, who lives and works on Cape Cod, has had two previous solo exhibits of his work at the Brewster Ladies Library, in 2006 and 2007.

Daniel Springer paints contemporary, luminous, atmospheric landscapes evoking an emotional sense of place. He captures moments when light creates a contemplative mood compelling the viewer to linger. Trained at Parsons School of Design in NYC, he currently chairs the Fine & Performing Arts Department at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, sits on the Advisory Board of the Cape Cod & Islands Art Educators Association and teaches at the Cape Cod Museum of Art.

An ART-escape with Pearl Street and Main Street

ARTwalk Thursday On Thursday, July 2 from 5:00 - 8:00 pm, galleries and restaurants on Pearl Street and Main Street in Hyannis invite visitors to enjoy a "culture crawl" and take in the works as unique as the artists who create them. Live music and refreshments enhance the fun.  Guyer Barn will be open and musicians will be strolling Main Street throughout the evening.

Joining Bonnie in the show include Maureen Callahan, Anne Higginbottom, Martha Jason, Janet Noonan, Susan Serluco, Rosemary Smith and Mary Chris Parker.  Bonnie facilitates these artists at art sessions at her home.  She prefers to think of herself  as a facilitator/encourager as opposed to an art teacher.

Screening of Short Films by A.S. Films International

A.S. International To celebrate Independence Day and an increasingly vibrant film scene on Cape Cod, directors Dan Boylan and Guy Taylor of A.S. Films International will screen a series of short films exploring themes of freedom and America's role in the world at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod on July 2 at 7:00 pm.

In addition to Clam Pie, an award-winning short comedy that features Cape locations, the evening includes a special director's screening of The DC Trilogy, three short films that take a non-traditional approach to 9/11-related issues - war, terrorism and espionage. One film won a 2008 CINE Golden Eagle award and another premiered at last year's Cannes Film Festival in the Short Film Corner, where Boylan and Taylor promoted the trilogy with theatrical trailers in Arabic, Turkish, Spanish, and French.

Dreams and Harsh Realities opens at Bowerstock Gallery on July 3 with a reception from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. The exhibition runs July 3 - 28.

The artists all worked to dreamscape CDs designed by Morabito; the single most sought after and popular DJ working the gay scene. Morabito is one of the few females to work the male circuit scene, a legend after more than 20 years playing the top clubs. Morabito will attend the opening and present her mix live.

The Schoolhouse Gallery presents it premier exhibition for the 2009 season.  NEW /NOW is a special exhibition consisting of artwork from seventeen artists all new to the gallery. The artists consist of two photographers, three sculptors and twelve painters, though many move between mediums.

The exhibition will be on display now - July 8. It has been set to coincide with the Provincetown International Film Festival and will be on view over Provincetown's large July 4th weekend celebration. There will be a public reception on Friday, July 3 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm.

The Barnstable Summer Family Theater proudly announces the arrival on Cape Cod of His Supreme Majestic Ruler of the Universe, Xandarararara, and his army of Meeps in the world premiere of Goldilocks and the Three Bears from Outer Space, written and directed by John and Fred Sullivan, set for July 7 at 7:00 pm in the Barnstable High School Performing Arts Center. They will be appearing for ten shows only, July 7-11 and 14 -18, before they teleport back to their galaxy, hopefully never to return.

Sylvia Miles Performs Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth

Sylvia Miles Twice Oscar-nominated actress Sylvia Miles, a long time friend of Tennessee Williams, returns to Provincetown for an exclusive performance in a staged reading of the famous opening scene of Williams' hit Broadway play and classic film Sweet Bird of Youth on July 11 at 6:00 pm.

This benefit performance, for the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival, at the Norman Mailer House in Provincetown overlooking the picturesque Provincetown Harbor, marks Miles' first appearance in Provincetown in 23 years.

The Provincetown Art Association and Museum is pleased to announce Window to the Sea: Birds, Light and Water, a retrospective exhibition of the work of Pat de Groot now - August 2.

The exhibition represents twenty-five years of observing the meeting of the sea and sky as it appears outside her window facing Provincetown Harbor.  On display will be twenty-five paintings showing the harbor light as it changes throughout the seasons; oil on paper drawings of black ducks and water; and an installation of calligraphic studies of cormorants drawn in a kayak at the breakwater.

  • Harwich Junior Theatre will be offering four Special Fridays Theatre Workshops for Kids this summer at Cotuit Center for the Arts, 4404 Falmouth Road (Route 28) in Cotuit. These three-hour exposure based workshops are a great introduction to the world of theatre.   • New publication requests for photographers and artists: The Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, Coastal Community Capital, Homebuilders and Remodelers Association of Cape Cod, Cotuit Center for the Arts, and Cultural Center of Cape Cod are creating a Sourcebook of Handcrafted Items with Architectural Elements designed for Architects, Designers and Builders.  Artists must live or have their main place of business on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, or Nantucket and be able to supply photographs of work installed in homes or businesses.  The photographer selected needs extensive experience in interior shots, with particular skills in lighting and staging.   • Call to artists to help support veterans: in search of artists, professional and otherwise, whether it's with a paint brush, cooking spatula, a guitar with a few chords, or a poet writing a poem.   • Painters, sculptors, photographers and printmakers may register for ART at the FARM (Meetinghouse Farm outdoor Show and Sale in West Barnstable on August 15 during the Village Festival) by June 30 to receive the discounted entry fee.   • Counter Productions, the primary renter at the Provincetown Theater, is employing stage crew and tech people for their 2009 Summer Season.   • The Falmouth Cultural Council's Art Market is up and going for its third summer. It is running now - September 3, every Thursday from 3:00 - 8:00 pm, at Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There are about 30 local artists showing and selling their artworks. And there are musicians performing and the occasional surprise performers. Everyone is invited to come, show or sell art, publicize upcoming events or classes, etc. There is no charge if nothing is sold and only a 15% commission on what is sold. Proceeds go towards the Falmouth Cultural Council's grants pool to be given to local artists and arts organizations. For more information email martket@verizon.net.

Auditions
  • The Woods Hole Theater Company will hold auditions for Arthur Miller's play All My Sons on July 20-21 at 7:30 pm in the Old Fire Station in Woods Hole. Roles for 5 men and 4 women, ages 25-60. The play will be directed by Joan Edstrom. Performance dates are October 8-24, Thursdays through Saturdays.
