Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Announces Fall 2010 Grant Deadline Funding Available for Artists and Cultural Organizations
 | The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, the designated local arts
agency for Barnstable County, is pleased to announce its next grant
cycle. Applications are now available for the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Spring grants
cycle, which has a deadline of 5 pm, on Monday, October 18, 2010. Please note the new date.
The
Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Grants Program provides cash awards to local artists and cultural
organizations that are engaged in projects that help create a strong,
stable, and diverse arts and culture industry on Cape Cod, and
contribute positively to the quality of life and economic vitality of
the region. Preference is given to specific program initiatives,
particularly those enhancing the arts education of learners of all
ages, and to collaborative efforts within the arts community.
The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod will hold a grants information workshop for interested applicants on Wednesday, September 15 at 5:30 pm at the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod offices in Centerville.
First time applicants are strongly urged to attend this workshop.

Hyannis Harbor Art Shanties Open into Fall Season
The Harbor your Arts Artist Shanties at Hyannis Harbor/Bismore Park are open through the first weekend in October (Fall for the Arts weekend). The shanties are open seven days a week, now - September 6, 11am - 8 pm, then weekends September 10 - October 3, 11am - 5 pm. In addition to five full season artist shanties, there are two rotating shanties, which feature a new artist or group of artists each week.
The featured artists now - August 27 are Jen Villa, a photographer and collage artist, and Karen Crocker, an impressionistic landscape/seascape oil painter. The featured August 28 - September 10 are Roberta Anslow, an award-winning photographer, and SheArt, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing women growth through creative expression.

The Many Faces of Peter Rabbit at Green Briar Nature Center
Harrison Cady  | The Many Faces of Peter Rabbit is a new exhibit currently on display at the Thornton W. Burgess Society's Green Briar Nature Center now through the fall. Peter Rabbit, the most beloved character in the stories by Sandwich born author and naturalist, Thornton Burgess, was depicted by many illustrators over the years. This exhibit presents examples of the work of children's illustrators and nature painters as shown through their sometimes fanciful, sometimes lifelike versions of Peter. While a number of different illustrators are included here, Harrison Cady illustrated more Burgess books and stories than all the others combined.

This is Marc Civitarese's first show at the Alden Gallery, having become a gallery artist last fall. The subject of his oil-and-wax paintings has consistently been coastal horizons. For his third show at the Alden, Kevin Cyr is creating a wall of ice-cream truck oil-and-silkscreen paintings in his customary style, which is to treat banged-up and graffiti- and decal-covered trucks as the subject of regal portraiture. Exhibit of Works by Oana Lauric
Cape Boats by Oana Lauric  | An exhibit of work by Oana Lauric will be on exhibit in the Great Hall at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod now - September 5. A reception to celebrate her work, as well as paintings by Theresa Hadley and Beth Buckingham, will take place on August 27, 5 - 7 pm. Oana Lauric is an Italian artist, born in Romania, who lived and studied in Paris for a decade and is currently working in her studio in Maine. Since participating in the 2009 Hyannis Art Festival and returning to the area to visit, Oana has been shaped by the Cape as well and has created a body of work to convey her reaction to its color and light, shapes and textures. Cape Cod Fine Art Festival Returns to Hyannis
The Cape Cod Fine Arts Festival returns for its second year to the Hyannis Village Green on August 28, 10 am - 6 pm and August 29, 10 am - 5 pm.
The event showcases the original artwork of more than 90 national artists from 21 states and Canada juried from a national talent pool of over 45,000 artists including painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelers, and both glass and ceramic artists.
The Cape Cod Fine Arts Festival is hosted by the Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District and sponsored by Cape Cod Life, The Heritage House Hotel and Chauncy's Bar & Grille. Caitlin completed her senior year at the Massachusetts College of Art with a Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts in Photography and Art History. This summer she was enrolled into the Creative Residency program at the Parsons School of Art and Design in Paris. She has interned with several talented and knowledgable professional historians, artists and photographers.

Two New Exhibitions from the Cape Cod Museum of Art's Collection

The works in Unseen Gifts are donations made to the museum in 2009 that were not shown in the museum's annual Recent Gifts and Acquisitions. The artwork in Red are objects from the CCMA collection that use the color red within the context of the piece.

Request for Submissions for HANDS: a Juried Exhibition
Cotuit Center for the Arts announces a special juried exhibition to be mounted in conjunction with the Cape Cod premiere of the documentary film See What I'm Saying: The Deaf Entertainer's Documentary. Submissions are being accepted now - September 1. The art exhibit will be the first in the newly dubbed "Art Above the Sails" gallery on the second level of the theater. The theme of this exhibit is HANDS. As the primary method of deaf communication is through signing and the use of hands, this exhibit will be an powerful compliment to the screening. Even more significant is the launch of an ongoing series of workshops and programs specifically designed for the deaf and hearing impaired.

Deadline Soon for NEFA's New England States Touring (NEST) Grants
The next deadline for New England's Foundation for the Arts' New England States Touring (NEST) grant program is September 1. These grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations based in New England and support performances and activities by select New England performing artists, or NEST artists. NEST artists are performing artists from New England who meet the NEST Artist Requirements on MatchBook.org. They represent a wide range of disciplines, such as chamber music, contemporary dance, opera, spoken word, puppet theater, and storytelling. There are currently over 300 NEST artists.

This year, the competitive, anonymously judged MCC Artist Fellowships program offers fellowships of $7,500 and finalist awards of $500, as direct support to individual artists in recognition of artistic excellence. Poetry Reading by Maxine Kumin
Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill presents a poetry reading by Maxine Kumin on September 10, 8 pm at the Wellfleet Public Library.
Maxine's sixteenth poetry collection, Still to Mow, appeared in 2007 in her 82nd year, following Jack and Other New Poems, The Long Marriage, and Selected Poems 1960-1990. She is also the author of Always Beginning: Essays on a Life in Poetry, and a memoir, Inside the Halo and Beyond: Anatomy of a Recovery. Her awards include the Ruth E. Lilly Poetry Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the Harvard Arts and the Robert Frost Medals. She served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (now titled Poet Laureate) in 1980-81.

Power of Play and Paint: Outdoors in Eastham with Diane Brinker
Diane Brinker  | Diane Brinker will hold an outdoor Power of Play and Paint class on August 31, 11 am - 2 pm in Eastham. Several "abstract expressionist" works of art will be created using copious buckets of paint, brushes, squeeze bottles, and pots and pans, while catching many pointers on color value, intensity, line and proportion. Appropriate for all ages, though any young artists must have a participating adult in attendance. All materials will be supplied. This workshop will take place indoors in case of inclement weather.

Ballroom Bliss: Next Session of Group Classes
Ballroom Bliss will hold dance classes on Tuesdays, September 7 - 28, 7 pm and 8 pm, at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. At 7 pm is Beginner's Tango and 8 pm is Intermediate Tango.
Classes are taught in 4-week sessions in a progressive format beginning with the basics. New steps, turns and variations are added each week. Classes are taught using the DVIDA dance curriculum, a world recognized dance syllabus used by ballroom dance professionals around the globe. Art Encounter and Retreat with Mary Moquin
Mary Moquin will lead an art retreat weekend on September 10 - 12 on Sandy Neck. This encounter is designed to increase ones sensitivity and responsiveness to the landscape. It is not a traditional plein air painting trip. Sandy Neck, a 7-mile barrier beach in Barnstable, is accessible by four-wheel drive. The destination will be the cottage colony located at the tip. Communal cape themed meals will be prepared by a fellow cottage owner. Friday and/or Saturday evening will include a campfire gathering.
