Important Grant News from the Massachusetts Cultural Council

MCC logoWith the Massachusetts Cultural Council facing a budget cut of nearly $1 million, the board of the MCC voted reluctantly to suspend grantmaking for the Adams Arts Program in fiscal year 2012.

This decision to suspend grantmaking in this program was a difficult one, but was necessitated by a series of sharp cuts in both state and federal funding for the MCC. The MCC's state appropriation has been cut 33% since 2009, and 56% since 2002. This year the MCC will also absorb an additional 7% cut in federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. These reductions have resulted in many years of deep cuts to our core grant programs for nonprofit cultural organizations, local cultural councils, schools and youth programs.

At the same time, the board voted unanimously to seek a supplemental state appropriation of $750,000 to restore Adams funding and allow the program to continue without interruption in the current fiscal year. Competition for these funds will be intense - dozens of state programs have experienced cutbacks during this period of economic stagnation and revenue decline. The MCC asks for assistance in making its best case
with the Governor and the Legislature.
