Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Announces Fall 2010 Grant Deadline Funding Available for Artists and Cultural Organizations
 | The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, the designated local arts agency for Barnstable County, is pleased to announce its next grant
cycle. Applications are now available for the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Spring grants
cycle, which has a deadline of 5 pm, on Monday, October 18, 2010. Please note the new date.
The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Grants Program provides cash awards to local artists and cultural
organizations that are engaged in projects that help create a strong,
stable, and diverse arts and culture industry on Cape Cod, and
contribute positively to the quality of life and economic vitality of
the region. Preference is given to specific program initiatives,
particularly those enhancing the arts education of learners of all
ages, and to collaborative efforts within the arts community.
The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod will hold a grants information workshop for interested applicants on Wednesday, September 15 at 5:30 pm at the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod offices in Centerville.
First time applicants are strongly urged to attend this workshop.

Celebrate the Arts on Cape Cod with Fall for the Arts

Between Sea and Sky: 21 in Truro's Annual Exhibit
The Cultural Center of Cape Cod will host 21 in Truro's Between Sea and Sky from September 8 - 19, with a reception on Friday, September 10, 5 - 7 pm. Artist demonstrations and talks by many of the artists will be held on Thursday, September 16, 12:30 - 5 pm.
This exhibition marks the 11th year that 21 in Truro will be showing their works after week-long retreats in Truro where they share info and refresh their creative spirits. The paintings will be of the fondness for and inspiration from the beauty of Cape Cod, its light, changing moods, the ocean, the marshes, the tides and wind. The natural landscape still to be found and the changes that man has made are often captured in the paintings. The artists work in many styles from realistic to abstract.

Hyannis Harbor Art Shanties Open into Fall Season
The Harbor your Arts Artist Shanties at Hyannis Harbor/Bismore Park are open through the first weekend in October (Fall for the Arts weekend). The shanties are open seven days a week, now - September 6, 11 am - 8 pm, then September 7 - October 3, 11 am - 5 pm. In addition to five full season artist shanties, there are two rotating shanties, which feature a new artist or group of artists each week.
The featured artists now - September 10 are Roberta Anslow, an award-winning photographer who specializes in original, natural-light photography printed on canvas, and SheArt, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing women of all ages, backgrounds and talents the opportunity for emotional and financial growth through creative expression.

The Many Faces of Peter Rabbit at Green Briar Nature Center
Harrison Cady  | The Many Faces of Peter Rabbit is a new exhibit currently on display at the Thornton W. Burgess Society's Green Briar Nature Center now through the fall. Peter Rabbit, the most beloved character in the stories by Sandwich born author and naturalist, Thornton Burgess, was depicted by many illustrators over the years. This exhibit presents examples of the work of children's illustrators and nature painters as shown through their sometimes fanciful, sometimes lifelike versions of Peter. While a number of different illustrators are included here, Harrison Cady illustrated more Burgess books and stories than all the others combined.

Meet the Artists & Craftsmen Reception
On Thursday, September 2, 5:30 - 7:30 pm, meet many of the Cape's craftsmen and artists who create custom items for the home. Approximately 15 craftsmen will be on hand to display their creations and provide some home inspiration at the Cape Cod Museum of Art.
The participating craftsmen and artists are among those featured in the Sourcebook of Architectural and Design Elements Handcrafted on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. Created by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce and partners, the sourcebook includes metal work, concrete, clay, handmade furniture, tile, fabrics, stone fireplaces, hand blown lighting fixtures, custom sinks and much more, some of which will be on display. Artists will have portfolios available.

Caitlin Sundby  | There will be a reception on Friday, September 3, 5:30 pm at the South Yarmouth Library to honor the work of the 2010 Seimen Scholarship winner Caitlin Sundby.
Caitlin completed her senior year at the Massachusetts College of Art with a Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts in Photography and Art History. This summer she was enrolled into the Creative Residency program at the Parsons School of Art and Design in Paris. She has interned with several talented and knowledgable professional historians, artists and photographers.

Labor Day Weekend Benefit for WOMR at artSTRAND

Two New Exhibitions from the Cape Cod Museum of Art's Collection

The works in Unseen Gifts are donations made to the museum in 2009 that were not shown in the museum's annual Recent Gifts and Acquisitions. The artwork in Red are objects from the CCMA collection that use the color red within the context of the piece.

Sneak a Peek at the Fleet at Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies
Twenty artists have created works of art from 20 model sailboats built and donated by students at Provincetown High School. The Art Boats are on exhibit and open for bidding at the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies now - September 8. The Fleet will then be transported to the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) for a ticketed, evening event.

Original paintings, drawings, pen and ink, monoprint, fabric, mosaic, photography and more wanted for hanging in the Conservatory's exhibit space. Receiving dates are September 7 - 10, 10 am - 4 pm. Grants Available Through the Massachusetts Cultural Council
Solar Beginnings by Natalie Miebach  | | The Adams Arts Program is a grant program of the Massachusetts Cultural Council that seeks to promote economic and community development through the arts, sciences and humanities in Massachusetts. The Intent to Apply Deadline is September 10. View the guidelines and application.
This year, the competitive, anonymously judged MCC Artist Fellowships program offers fellowships of $7,500 and finalist awards of $500, as direct support to individual artists in recognition of artistic excellence. Applications are currently being accepted in the categories of Music Composition, Playwriting, and Sculpture/Installation with a deadline of September 20. Applications in the categories of Crafts, Film & Video, and Photography will be accepted beginning December 1, with a deadline of January 24, 2011. The deadline for both of these grant applications is October 15.
Schools and libraries can apply for Local Cultural Council Program grants to fund cultural enrichment activities (field trips, artist-in-residency programs, lectures, performances, etc.) that are led by outside artists, humanists, or scientists. Expenses related to classroom or extra-curricular activities are not eligible. More on LCC criteria. PASS grants fund cultural field trips for children, grades Pre-K through 12, by subsidizing the cost of admission to attend programs in the arts, humanities and sciences (including performances, educational tours and exhibits).

Author Carol McCleary Speaks at Cape Cod Museum of Art
Local writer Carol McCleary will talk about her latest book, The Alchemy of Murder on Thursday, September 9, 5:30 pm at the Cape Cod Museum of Art.
The Alchemy of Murder, a novel, begins with a very short history of Nellie Bly's background, but the mystery begins when Nellie has herself committed to the Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island. This commitment was the start of Bly's career. But for the reader, it's the start of Nellie's efforts to find a killer. The Alchemy of Murder has been sold in eight countries and was a finalist for the International CrimeFest Sony Award in Europe.

Bob Danzig grew from a childhood spent in numerous foster homes to two decades as nationwide head of the Hearst Newspaper Group and vice president of the Hearst Corporation. Bob is the author of The Leader Within You, Vitamins for the Spirit, Angel Threads, Every Child Deserves a Champion, and There Is Only One You. His latest work is called Shakespeare Lives on Cape Code (And Everywhere Else!), which was inspired by a group of friends on Cape Cod.

Poetry Reading by Maxine Kumin
Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill presents a poetry reading by Maxine Kumin on September 10, 8 pm at the Wellfleet Public Library.
Maxine's sixteenth poetry collection, Still to Mow, appeared in 2007 in her 82nd year, following Jack and Other New Poems, The Long Marriage, and Selected Poems 1960-1990. She is also the author of Always Beginning: Essays on a Life in Poetry, and a memoir, Inside the Halo and Beyond: Anatomy of a Recovery. Her awards include the Ruth E. Lilly Poetry Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the Harvard Arts and the Robert Frost Medals. She served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (now titled Poet Laureate) in 1980-81.

The Schoolhouse Gallery: 4th Annual Video Party - RESCHEDULED
The Schoolhouse Gallery presents its annual Video Party on Saturday, September 4, 7 - 10 pm, with videos presented from sunset to closing outdoors and indoors in the screening room. Diff'rent at the Provincetown Theater
The Provincetown Theater presents Eugene O'Neill's Diff'rent from September 9 - 19, 7:30 pm, Thursdays - Sundays. The production will be at the Provincetown Theater for two weeks before traveling to the Boatslip for the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Festival weekend.
Written in 1920, Diff'rent was revived in 1940 in Provincetown at the Artists' Theatre. As described by O'Neill himself, the play is a "tale of the eternal, romantic idealist who is in all of us - the eternally defeated one."

The Art Barn Songwriter Series at CCftA
The Cotuit Center for the Arts and Trespass Music are partnering to present The Art Barn Songwriter Series beginning on Monday, September 13, 7:30 pm. Ballroom Bliss: Next Session of Group Classes
Ballroom Bliss will hold dance classes on Tuesdays, September 7 - 28, 7 pm and 8 pm, at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. At 7 pm is Beginner's Tango and 8 pm is Intermediate Tango.
Classes are taught in 4-week sessions in a progressive format beginning with the basics. New steps, turns and variations are added each week. Classes are taught using the DVIDA dance curriculum, a world recognized dance syllabus used by ballroom dance professionals around the globe. Ballroom Bliss's teaching style is "Cape Cod Casual" - hip, fun and relaxed designed to get students comfortable out on the dance floor. Singles and couples ages 14 and up are welcome.

Art Encounter and Retreat with Mary Moquin
Mary Moquin will lead an art retreat weekend on September 10 - 12 on Sandy Neck. This encounter is designed to increase ones sensitivity and responsiveness to the landscape. It is not a traditional plein air painting trip. Sandy Neck, a 7-mile barrier beach in Barnstable, is accessible by four-wheel drive. The destination will be the cottage colony located at the tip. Communal cape themed meals will be prepared by a fellow cottage owner. Friday and/or Saturday evening will include a campfire gathering.

Merger of CCSO and CCCMA Moves Forward
The boards of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra (CCSO) and the Cape Cod Conservatory of Music & Arts (CCCMA) have announced that their two non-profit organizations have officially merged. Their combined mission is to enrich and further the cultural, educational and economic interests of Cape Cod through music, dance and art and to provide a strengthened environment that actively encourages lifelong involvment with music and the arts.
The merger will make it possible to accomplish long-range goals such as developing a full youth orchestra on Cape Cod, establishing a summer arts and music camp and building a music education institution of national stature. From the very youngest to the adult learner/performer, outstanding music, arts and performance opportunities will be available for everyone who is interested.
