Fall for the Arts The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and Cape Cod VIEW Magazine are delighted to announce that the Second Annual Fall for the Arts Festival will be celebrated on the weekend of Friday, October 2 - Sunday, October 4.

Fall for the Arts promotes and celebrates the vibrant arts and culture of Cape Cod. Cape residents and visitors will enjoy free, family-friendly performances by local musicians; arts and crafts workshops and demonstrations; guided tours; delicious food; and a spectrum of activities at hundreds of venues, including artist studios, museums, galleries, restaurants, libraries and parks.

All fifteen Cape towns are participating and showcasing the unique artistic flavor and flair of their communities.  Please visit www.artsfoundation.org/fall-for-the-arts for a town-by-town list of the festival happenings.

AFCC Fall 2009 Grant Applications Due October 9

AFCC Fall Grants The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod's Grants Program provides cash awards to cultural organizations and local artists that are engaged in projects that help create a strong, stable, and diverse arts and culture industry on Cape Cod, and contribute positively to the quality of life and economic vitality of the region.

Preference is given to proposals that enhance the arts education of learners of all ages on Cape Cod, and to collaborative efforts within the arts community. The AFCC does not award grants for general operating expenses. The Board of Directors will consider a limited number of awards up to $5,000, but because the AFCC is interested in supporting as many worthwhile endeavors as possible, grant size is generally limited to within a range of $500 to $2,500.

Arts Foundation of Cape Cod grants are awarded twice a year. The next deadline for applications is October 9 at 5:00 pm. Guidelines for grant applications are available at www.artsfoundation.org/grants-program or by calling the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod at 508-362-0066.

Antique Maritime Handicrafts at the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth

Antique Maritime Handicrafts The Historical Society of Old Yarmouth presents a unique exhibit of historical nautical creations from now - September 23, 1:00 - 4:00 pm daily, at the Captain Bangs Hallet House Museum. Items from private collections are on display throughout the museum. They reflect the art of the sailor away on long voyages at sea during the nineteenth century. Local crafters will also display contemporary examples of the nautical crafts. Lectures each day at 2:00 pm each day.

At the Whim of the Waters at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod

Disappearing Island Culture The Cultural Center of Cape Cod will display an unusual exhibit of images found decades after they were taken by Rollins Tyler, all depicting a disappearing way of life on tiny, remote Smith Island in Chesapeake Bay where his family had lived for generations. The exhibit runs September 23 - October 4, with a reception on September 26 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.

Roger Cook will also give a talk about the graphic designer/artist as a problem-solver on September 17 at 6:00 pm. He will speak on the transformation the graphic design industry from the 1940s and '50s to the present, emphasizing the artist as problem solver.

Natural Science Illustration: Darwin to Digital at Highfield Hall 

Darwin to DigitalA diverse view of Science Illustration in recognition of Darwin's bicentennial, this exhibit at Highfield Hall from September 21 - October 30, with a reception on September 25 from 5:00 - 7:30 pm, will highlight the range of styles, techniques and subjects that exist in the field today from members of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, New England Chapter. It will also showcase prints from the MBL/WHOI library's renowned collection of historical illustrations. Programs will also be offered during the span of the exhibit, including a slideshow and lecture on the field of Scientific Illustration; perspectives from a working illustrator; and a discussion on the MBL/WHOI library's collection.

Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival

Wartime in ProvincetownTennessee Williams spent several summers in P'town in the 1940s.  Harkening back to the time he saw preparations for war taking place in the harbor, the festival takes off with the theme of The Fight for Life with a walking tour led by a town historian to places of WW II significance, leading up to a performance of The Case of The Crushed Petunias, a lyrical play by Williams written in 1941, directed by Patrick Falco.  This festival kick-off  event on September 24 is sponsored by CTEK and the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.
 
At 6:00 pm, performance artist Jay Critchley blasts off with his 21 Gun Salute, with rockets blaring from a boat in the harbor, and a WOMR simulcast of his satirical play and 21 Blender Salute of frozen kamikazes at the Boatslip.  WOMR's Lady Di and MC extraordinaire will host visitors to the Event.

Stephanie Duckworth Elliot Stephanie Duckworth Elliott, a Chappaquiddick-born member of the Wampanoag Gay Head Tribe, will read from her debut book, Poneasequa, Goddess of the Waters, aimed at children ages 8-12, at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod on September 19 at 2:00 pm. The book is about a young Wampanoag girl who embarks upon a journey of self-discovery, learns to love herself and overcome obstacles. Musical interludes on Native American flute by Ej Mills Brennan, a multi-media Mashpee musician and artist. Book-signing will follow the reading.

Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill announces the schedule for its Senior Program beginning this month. The program offers free workshops for senior citizens in printmaking, ceramics, painting, and poetry. The workshops are tuition-free, and open to year-round residents of Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham and Orleans, who are 60 years of age or over. A materials fee may apply to some workshops. Castle Hill will hold a lottery to ensure the fair selection of participants in the Senior Program.

Upon returning an exhibit of works, created in Tuscany and those inspired by the journey, will be hosted at the instructor's gallery in Brewster.

4th Annual New Playwrights, New Plays Competition

Eventide Arts - New Playwrights New Plays The New Playwrights, New Plays Competition encourages and stimulates the writing and production of new full-length plays by Cape and Island writers. The Competition is sponsored by Eventide Arts. The Competition is open to full-length plays written by both new and experienced playwrights who live on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. One play will be selected by the judges and presented as a staged reading in June 2010. The winning Competition entry will be awarded the $1,000 Kaplan Prize.  

Completed plays and works-in-progress must first be submitted to the Competition by October 15. The second and final deadline for submission of edited plays is February 15, 2010.

The airplanes included in this living history tour are the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress "Nine O Nine" WWII Heavy Bomber, Consolidated B-24 Liberator "Witchcraft" WWII Heavy Bomber, and P-51 Mustang.

Salsa Dance Party at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod

Salsa Dance PartyThe Cultural Center of Cape Cod will hold a salsa dance party on Saturday, September 19 at 8:00 pm. A free salsa lesson begins at 8:00 and music and general dancing will go from 8:30 - 11:00 pm. Hosts Doug and Kimberlee McHugh of Ballroom Bliss are professional ballroom dance instructors with over ten years of experience. They teach group classes, private lessons, choreographed routines, and perform dance demonstrations.
