Second Annual FALL FOR THE ARTS a Tremendous Success

Fall for the Arts The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and Cape Cod VIEW magazine presented the region's largest weekend arts festival on Friday, October 2 - Sunday, October 4.
 
This cultural tourism initiative benefited artists, arts organizations, arts-based enterprises, retailers and restaurateurs in every town on Cape Cod.  After nearly a year of planning and hard work together, we succeeded in presenting a highly successful schedule of more than 450 events.

AFCC Fall 2009 Grant Applications Due Tomorrow, October 9

AFCC Grants The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod's Grants Program provides cash awards to cultural organizations and local artists that are engaged in projects that help create a strong, stable, and diverse arts and culture industry on Cape Cod, and contribute positively to the quality of life and economic vitality of the region.

Preference is given to proposals that enhance the arts education of learners of all ages on Cape Cod, and to collaborative efforts within the arts community. The AFCC does not award grants for general operating expenses. The Board of Directors will consider a limited number of awards up to $5,000, but because the AFCC is interested in supporting as many worthwhile endeavors as possible, grant size is generally limited to within a range of $500 to $2,500.

Arts Foundation of Cape Cod grants are awarded twice a year. The next deadline for applications is tomorrow, October 9 at 5:00 pm. Guidelines for grant applications are available at www.artsfoundation.org/grants-program or by calling the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod at 508-362-0066.


Massachusetts Cultural Council Grants
Artist Fellowship Deadline Next Week

MCC logo and pic The deadline for Artist Fellowships applications in Drawing, Painting and Traditional Arts is next week on Tuesday, October 13.

Applications in the categories of Choreography, Fiction/Creative Nonfiction, and Poetry will be accepted beginning December 1, with a deadline of January 25.

Woods Hole nurtures many potters and a wide variety of artistic styles, and exhibit features six: Ann Little Newbury, Hollis Engley, Anne Halpin, Ron Geering, Joan Lederman, Tessa Morgan.

History and Reconstruction of the Woods Hole Drawbridge
It includes recorded stories, an interactive piece, video footage of the bridge's reconstruction, still photos, old films, and objects connected with the bridge's history. Show designed by Jennifer Junker.

Celebrating their 16th Current Images exhibit, Brenda L. Bechtel and Maure Fennessy Ryley present Rhythms of the Sea at the Old Selectmen's Artist Gallery from October 14 - 25. Gallery hours are Wednesday - Saturday, 10:00 am- 4:00 pm and Sundays, noon - 4:00 pm.

Published Illustrator, Brenda L. Bechtel, will feature paintings in oil, watercolour, pastel as well as archival limited edition giclee prints inspired by her travels of Cape Cod and beyond. Maure Fennessy Ryley's monotypes, watercolors and mirrors selected for juried exhibits in 2008 and 2009, will also be displayed along with 3 generations of art work.

The four artists, Vico Fabbris, Susan Lyman, Michael Mazur and Nathalie Miebach, explore contemporary responses to nature, re-interpreting Hans Hofmann's dictum, declared in 1950: "The creative process lies not in imitating, but in paralleling nature-translating the impulse received from nature into the medium of expression, thus vitalizing this medium."

The Higgins Art Gallery presents Continuum, an exhibition by Artist in Residence Mike Wright, from October 19 - November 13. An opening reception will be held on October 23 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. A gallery talk will be given on October 29 at 1:00 pm.

Mike is a contemporary modernist sculptor who pays homage, with humor and grace, to the working past of the Provincetown community.  Using the process of assemblage, she collects salvaged, discarded wood remnants of the fishing fleet and old local homes and creates modernists sculptures.

Glimpses of a Provincetown Collection at Cape Cod Museum of Art

On display at CCMA now - November 15 is Glimpses of a Provincetown Collection, a collaboration of the CCMA and a local art collector of an exhibition of work by 37 men and women born in the last half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century who made significant contributions to the artistic life of Provincetown. The contribution of each artist was enhanced and influenced by the work of the others, creating a web of intellectual and aesthetic relationships and counterpoints.

A reprise of a lecture by American music specialist Robert Wyatt previously presented at the Smithsonian Institution. WHTC to perform The Dixie Swim Club

Young @ Heart Chorus Benefit Concert for Cape Abilities

Young @ HeartIn their only Cape Cod and Islands appearance, Young @ Heart is performing a benefit concert for Cape Abilities at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center on Friday, October 16 at 7:30 pm. Young @ Heart is a rowdy bunch of 70 and 80 year olds singing music "your mother wouldn't like." All proceeds benefit Cape Abilities.

Blues Musician Martin Grosswendt Performs in Woods Hole

Join Sue Marcus as she leads a discussion of The Life of the Skies, a book that is ostensibly about bird watching that becomes so much more. With references to literature, history, birding and beyond, Rosen meditates on human nature.

The Fine Arts Work Center presents a reading by Elizabeth Strout on Friday, October 9 at 8:00 pm. Elizabeth Strout won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for her collection Olive Kitteridge, about a woman and her immediate family and friends on the coast of Maine. She is also the author of Abide with Me, a national bestseller and Book Sense pick, and Amy and Isabelle, which won the Los Angeles Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction and the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize. She has also been a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Orange Prize. Her short stories have been published in magazines including The New Yorker and O: The Oprah Magazine.

Evolution of ArtThe Cotuit Center for the Art's Michelle Law will conduct two coordinating workshops for children ages 6-10 that will be offered during the Darwin in Malibu matinees on October 18 & 25 at 1:45 pm.  Students will journey through the Evolution of Art from hieroglyphics to modern masterpieces. Artists, learn how to photograph your own work at the Cape Cod Conservatory Falmouth campus with instructor Doug Long on Saturday, October 24 from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. This all-day, hands-on, user-friendly, low-pressure workshop for artists and craftspeople of all media who want to be able to take professional-looking photographs of their own work. Typical participants are: painters - oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor; sculptors; potters; jewelers; and other artists and craftspeople of all types.

Artists should bring to the workshop: two examples of work, a camera, a camera manual, and a tripod. Bring any photo equipment wanted for  evaluation, as well as any photos already taken and want to have critiqued. Registration required and class size limited to 10.

Participants will connect with the teaching of Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell and La Force Bailey through the 21st century approaches of gifted teaching-artists Carmen Cicero, Peter Watts, Robert Henry and Selina Trieff.

Multi-Week Workshops: The opportunity to develop creatively over these 4-8 week workshop sequences in the fall, winter and spring 2009-2010. Painting, drawing, and printmaking classes will be offered.

Free Art for Seniors Program at Castle Hill

Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill announces the schedule for its Senior Program beginning this month. The program offers free workshops for senior citizens in printmaking, ceramics, painting, and poetry. The workshops are tuition-free, and open to year-round residents of Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham and Orleans, who are 60 years of age or over. A materials fee may apply to some workshops. Castle Hill will hold a lottery to ensure the fair selection of participants in the Senior Program.

Cape artist Tom Stringe will be conducting a watercolor workshop May 2 - 9, 2010 in Tuscany. There will be five days of classes, each of which will take place in a different plein air setting, and will last approximately three hours. Each will include a watercolor demonstration, individual attention and critique. Classes will focus on capturing the light, color and feeling of each location  We will explore impressionism, realism and perhaps even the abstract. Upon returning an exhibit of works, created in Tuscany and those inspired by the journey, will be hosted at the instructor's gallery in Brewster.

AFCC Fall 2009 Grant Applications Due Tomorrow, October 9

AFCC Fall Grants The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod's Grants Program provides cash awards to cultural organizations and local artists that are engaged in projects that help create a strong, stable, and diverse arts and culture industry on Cape Cod, and contribute positively to the quality of life and economic vitality of the region.

Preference is given to proposals that enhance the arts education of learners of all ages on Cape Cod, and to collaborative efforts within the arts community. The AFCC does not award grants for general operating expenses. The Board of Directors will consider a limited number of awards up to $5,000, but because the AFCC is interested in supporting as many worthwhile endeavors as possible, grant size is generally limited to within a range of $500 to $2,500.

Arts Foundation of Cape Cod grants are awarded twice a year. The next deadline for applications is tomorrow, October 9 at 5:00 pm. Guidelines for grant applications are available at www.artsfoundation.org/grants-program or by calling the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod at 508-362-0066.

4th Annual New Playwrights, New Plays Competition

Eventide Arts - New Playwrights New Plays The New Playwrights, New Plays Competition encourages and stimulates the writing and production of new full-length plays by Cape and Island writers. The Competition is sponsored by Eventide Arts. The Competition is open to full-length plays written by both new and experienced playwrights who live on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. One play will be selected by the judges and presented as a staged reading in June 2010. The winning Competition entry will be awarded the $1,000 Kaplan Prize.  

Completed plays and works-in-progress must first be submitted to the Competition by October 15. The second and final deadline for submission of edited plays is February 15, 2010.

Joseph Fanelli, instructor and director of the North Truro School of Art on Cape Cod, has selected the Lyman-Eyer Gallery to represent his male figurative oil paintings. The male figure and flowers have been Mr. Fanelli's primary inspiration since 1980. his work has been exhibited numerous times over the past twenty years, in both group and solo shows.

The 4th Annual Honeybee Jamboree at CCMNH

Bee Jamboree On Saturday, October 10 from 1:00-3:00 pm the 4th Annual Honeybee Jamboree will take place at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. This special event is co-sponsored by the Barnstable County Beekeepers Association (BCBA). Members will present demonstrations and offering for sale their bee-related products, such as honey, candles, ointments and lotions. Members of the Museum bee group will explain the honey extraction process and provide fascinating information on beekeeping and honeybee hive activities and current concerns.

CCCM Vendor Fair On Wednesday, October 21 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, the Cape Cod Children's Museum will be hosting a free adult only, after hours, vendor fair.  Adults are welcome to come and enjoy an evening out with an opportunity to begin their holiday shopping all in one convenient location.
