FIRST this January at the Cotuit
Center for the Arts!
FIRST THINGS FIRST will feature the works of more than fifty well-known Cape Cod artists, as they explore what is most important
to them. This unique, free exhibit will introduce kids to the work of
established artists from Cape Cod, while
encouraging their own creativity through engaging educational activities during
their visit.
Keeping younger arts patrons in mind, artwork will be displayed
at a height of 4 feet throughout the exhibit - right at children's eye level -
and a docent will be assigned to each group that schedules a visit.
FIRST THINGS FIRST will be on display January 9 - February 6, 2010 at
the Cotuit Center for the Arts. Based on
advance bookings for school visits and the popularity of previously presented
exhibits, ROYGBIV, Self Portrait Cape Cod and When We Were
Younger, we anticipate high demand again in 2010. School visits will be
welcomed throughout the month-long exhibit, but availability is limited and
tends to fill up quickly, so please reserve your date as soon as possible to
avoid disappointment.

MAASH to Discuss Effects of Legalized Gambling on the Arts
The Massachusetts Legislature will revisit the issue of
casino gambling early next year. MAASH (Massachusetts Advocates for the Arts, Science and Humanities) wants to discuss
the potential impact of legalized gambling on the arts and culture in the
Commonwealth.
MAASH invites members of the cultural community to join them
for a special meeting on November 10, 4 pm at the
Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, 3 Shoot Flying Hill Road, Centerville. They are looking forward to
hearing your thoughts about casino gambling and possible efforts to secure state
gambling revenue for arts, culture and tourism. Members of our legislative

Tony Hoagland Comes to Cultural Center of Cape Cod to Listen and to Read
 | | photo by Kenna Bonner | Award-winning poet Tony Hoagland will be part of the audience for the Poets' Corner Open Mic on October 29, 7 pm at the Cultural Center before giving a reading to benefit the Center's poetry programs for young people.
The Poets' Corner is hosted on the last Thursday of each month by poets Barry Hellman and Joe Gouveia. There will be a "one poem, up to two minutes limit" at the event in order to give many poets a chance to read before Mr. Hoagland takes the podium.

The Cathedral of

theater and reminiscences in honor of the induction of Tennessee Williams into
the Cathedral's Poets' Corner, November 5,
7 pm. A special
Evensong Service will also be held on November 8, 4 pm to complete the tribute and to
unveil an
inscribed stone in tribute to Mr. Williams.
The Poets' Corner was
created in 1984 to memorialize American writers and is modeled after a similar
alcove at Westminster Abbey in London. Tennessee Williams is the
first poet/playwright to be inducted.

Provincetown Theater Fall Playwrights' Festival
The Provincetown Theater Company presents six new short plays and the stage reading of five original full-length plays during the Fall Playwrights' Festival, November 7 - 13. During these two weekends short plays will be staged four times and each full-length play will be read once at difference dates. The wealth of local Cape Cod playwrights makes this program possible as writers from Sandwich to Provincetown share their plays for the first time. The short plays run about 15 minutes each and create a full program together. The full-length readings each require a time slot of their own. Salvatore Scibona Wins Prestigious Whiting Writers' Award

This prestigious $50,000 award recognizes ten young writers for their talent and promise and is one of the most coveted prizes for up and coming writers.
Salvatore Scibona's first book, The End, is a novel about a single day in 1953 as lived by six people in an Ohio carnival crowd. Published in 2008 by Graywolf Press, it was the winner of the New York Public Library's Young Lions Fiction Award and a finalist for the National

Twenty-five artists help
celebrate 25 years at Cahoon Museum of Art
The Cahoon Museum of American Art is capping off
its 25th anniversary year with the invitational exhibition Twenty-Five for
Twenty-Five, featuring two works by each of 25 notable contemporary Cape

A. Leslie Ross was well known as a magazine illustrator, especially his
action sports covers for Super Sport, All Sports and Popular Sports and his work for Boy's Life
Magazine. He worked in oil and watercolor.

Thousand Men of Achievement honor.

Mary Doering is an unconventional photographer who mixes other media into her process to create highly stylized work that blurs the boundaries between photography and other visual mediums. Artists Photography Workshop

Artists, learn how to photograph your own work at the Cape Cod Conservatory with instructor Doug Long on Saturday, October 24, 10 am - 5 pm at the Barnstable campus and November 14, 10 am - 5 pm at the Falmouth campus. This all-day, hands-on, user-friendly, low-pressure workshop for artists and craftspeople of all media who want to be able to take professional-looking photographs of their own work. Typical participants are: painters - oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor; sculptors; potters; jewelers; and other artists and craftspeople of all types. Artists should bring to the workshop: two examples of work, a camera, a camera manual, and a tripod. The Town of Barnstable is pleased to announce that there is an available artist studio workspace available for rent at the Shirley Blair Flynn Center for the Creative Arts, which consists of a campus of town-owned properties providing artist living, work and gallery space at the corner of Pearl and South Streets.
Artists leasing the studio space are expected to promote the Center and participate in initiatives designed to involve the community in the arts, such as hosting open studio events or offering workshops and classes in their craft at the Guyer Art Barn. Selection will be made based on the prospective member's demonstrated willingness to contribute to the arts community.

- Harwich Junior Theatre will hold auditions for Peter Pan

Halloween Bash and Benefit Auction at Castle Hill
Castle Hill is throwing its first ever Halloween Bash and Silent Benefit Auction on October 31, 6 - 9 pm. Music will be spun by The Funky Soul Train Man: Matty Dread while we auction off works of the faculty, students and friends that came out of the Benefit Wood-firing. The evening will include Best Costume Contest and pumpkin carving contest. Bring your carved pumpkin that night or come on October 29, 4 - 6 pm for the Silent Auction Preview and carve a pumpkin directly at Castle Hill.

Friends of Cape Cod Museum of Art are hosting interior
designer, Susan A. Tuttle of Surroundings, Inc, in Orleans, MA, who will give a
presentation on
Art as
Inspiration for Room Design, November

Using
art from the Days Lumberyard 1915 - 1972 exhibition, Tuttle will
present four
different design boards illustrating how she might design a room using
four
different sets of paintings in the gallery. The CCMA is located off

release of twenty Northern Bobwhite quail. The birds were
