Eighth Annual Fellowship Competition for Award & Exhibition and New Works Galleries Exhibitions

Silver Eye Center for Photography, the oldest non-profit organization in Western Pennsylvania dedicated solely to the understanding and appreciation of photography as an art form, invites photographers to submit entries for our juried Fellowship Competition and our New Works Galleries.
Juror for Fellowship 2007: Katherine Ware, Curator of Photographs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art,s Alfred Stieglitz Center for Photography in the Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs. One photographer will be selected to receive a $5000 Fellowship and have a one-person exhibition in the Main Gallery of Silver Eye. Ten photographers will be recognized with the distinction of Honorable Mention. They will receive a $100 honorarium and will be invited to exhibit one photograph each.

Smack Mellon Artist Studio Program
The residency will run from May 1, 2008- April 1, 2009.
Application Deadline: October 15, 2007
Applications will be accepted online beginning September 15, 2007. Images may be uploaded from September 15 until October 15 through the Smack Mellon website.
The 2008/2009 Studio Program will be housed on the lower level of Smack Mellon's newly renovated building at 92 Plymouth Street. Smack Mellon offers free studio space to eligible artists for a one-year period. The program provides artists working in all visual arts media a free private studio space and a $5000 fellowship (dependent upon funding). The program does not provide living space. Artists also have access to shared facilities that include a fabrication shop, 2 G5 workstations for video editing, DVD burner and CD read/write capabilities, 2 emacs, flatbed and slide scanners, DVD players, projectors and monitors, wireless Internet access and technical support.
Studios range in size from 250 to 300 square feet. Not all studios have windows. Artists will not be permitted to choose their studio. Artists who are accepted into the program must be prepared to actively use their studio a minimum of 50 hours a month or they will lose it. Artists may not accept a residency at another studio program during the same time as their Smack Mellon residency.
Eligibility
All applicants must be residents of the United States or have a valid visa not expiring before the end of the program, 18 years or older, may not be enrolled in any degree program and must be able to demonstrate need for a studio. Applicants may not be a resident artist in another studio program at the same time as the 2008/2009 Smack Mellon residency.
Selection Process
A panel of arts professionals and artists will review applications and select artists for the 2008-2009 season. Artists will be selected by the quality of their work and their potential for making the most of their time in the program. The selection process will be completed by the end of February 2008. All applicants will be notified by mail.
