Retired Falmouth Teacher Receives Arts Leadership Award

Martin TullochThe Arts Foundation of Cape Cod awarded the Leadership in support of the Arts Award to Mr. Martin Tulloch, longtime music and theater teacher at Falmouth High School and member of the Falmouth Cultural Council, at the first annual Creative Collaborative conference last night.

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod conferred four new awards on leaders in the cultural community of Cape Cod in front of a standing room only crowd at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod.  The awards ceremony followed the day-long regional Creative Collaborative conference, which drew artists and cultural organizations from across Cape Cod to celebrate the year’s best collaborative projects in the arts.

The 2007 honorees were: Carl Lopes of Barnstable, Arts Educator of the Year; Harry Holl of Dennis, Lifetime Achievement Award; Martin Tulloch of Falmouth, Community Leadership in Support of the Arts; and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum Student Curating Project, Collaborative Arts Project of the Year.  These four new awards will be presented each year by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod at the annual Creative Collaborative Conference in the fall.

Most recently, Marty took the lead in creating the Artists’ Market in Falmouth, an outdoor bazaar of local artists and artisans that was held each Thursday evening on Main Street in downtown Falmouth.  His vision was to create this market to draw people downtown, and to raise the visibility of the thriving arts community in Falmouth to visitors and residents.

The weekly events were a huge success.  After surveying local artists to gauge their interest in the project, Marty secured a location on Main Street, in front of the Odd Fellows’ Hall, purchased tents, arranged for live music performances at each gathering, promoted the events in the local press and through word-of-mouth, and personally underwrote the initial cost involved in putting together this tremendous event.

Dr. Kathleen Taylor recalls how rewarding it was “to see people browsing and purchasing art work, to see families sitting on the lawn near the musicians, and to see children dancing and playing on summer evenings, surrounded by local art.”
