Centerville MA, May 30, 2006 - William Hopper, a Dennis resident and senior at the Sturgis Charter Public School in Hyannis, is the first place winner of the Comcast Cape-wide Student Art Contest, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod announced today. Hopper’s winning design will be featured on the official Arts Foundation of Cape Cod T-shirt commemorating the 21st TD Banknorth Annual Pops by the Sea concert on August 6, 2006.
“Comcast is proud to provide scholarship funding to student artists and their high school art departments to emphasize the importance of arts in our schools,” said Tom Coughlin, Regional Vice President for Comcast. “It is another way that we support education in the communities that we serve.”
Both Hopper and the Sturgis Charter Public School will each receive a $500 cash prize for the winning design. Second place winner Kacey Rayder and her sponsoring art department at Chatham High School will both receive $250. Third place winners Daniel Dobbins of Bourne High School and Alexandra Elizabeth Bull of Chatham High School each receive $100, and an additional $100 will be awarded to their sponsoring school art departments.
The students will receive their awards at a gala reception, to be held at the Cotuit Center for the Arts on Monday June 5, at 6 p.m. The review committee for this year’s Comcast Student Art Contest included Clarke Buchanon, Sam Diego's Restaurant; Lt. David Cameron, Barnstable Police Department; Ben Caswell, Wendell Marketing, LLC; Mike Chatham, the first Comcast design contest winner; Florence Lowell, Naked Oyster Bistro & Raw Bar; David Munsell, Munsell Appraisal Services; Mary O’Keefe, Comcast Cable Communications; Gabriela Paredes, College Solutions Network, LLC; Janice Rohlf, Cape Cod Life; Matt Titus, Christmas Tree Shop; and Jamie Wolf, Cotuit Center for the Arts.
The 21st Annual TD Banknorth Pops by the Sea concert will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. August 6, 2006 on the Hyannis Village Green. The event marks the only Cape Cod appearance of Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, and this year features guest conductor William Shatner and special musical guest Rockapella. Proceeds generated by the concert support the programs of the AFCC.
