Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Announces Student Art Scholarship Winners

Chatham Student’s Winning Design In Comcast Cape-Wide Student Art Contest To Be Printed on 2008 Pops By The Sea Commemorative T-Shirt on 2008 Pops By The Sea Commemorative T-Shirt

Centerville, MA, May 19, 2008 - Kasey Rayder, a Chatham resident and senior at Chatham High School, is the winner of the Comcast Cape-Wide Student Art Contest, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod announced today. Rayder’s winning design will be featured on the official Arts Foundation of Cape Cod T-shirt commemorating the 23rd Annual TD Banknorth Annual Pops by the Sea concert on August 3, 2008.
“We are proud to provide scholarship funding to student artists and support their high school art departments to emphasize the importance of art education in our local schools,” said Tom Coughlin, Vice President of Comcast’s Southeastern Massachusetts Region, which sponsors the annual student art competition. “We are committed to investing in the communities we serve and are happy to congratulate this year’s winners.”

“These scholarships provide much-needed support to Cape Cod student artists and their schools’ art departments,” said Margaret Van Sciver, Arts Foundation of Cape Cod President. “We received a record number of extremely high-quality entries for this year’s art scholarship competition, and congratulate all who entered for their creative achievements.”
Both Rayder and Chatham High School will each receive a $500 cash prize for the winning design. Second place winner Lauren LeDuc and her sponsoring art department at Barnstable High School will both receive $250. Third place winners Josh Lind and Brandi Peake of Cape Cod Regional Technical High School will each receive $100, and an additional $100 will be awarded to their sponsoring school art department. Honorable mentions went to Natalie Ferro of the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, Sabrina Johnson of Nauset Regional High School, and Eric Mack of the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School. Each honorable mention winner and their school will receive a $50 prize.
The students will receive their awards at a reception at Cape Cod Academy in Osterville on Wednesday, May 28 at 6:00 pm. The reception will also mark the unveiling of the commissioned painting for the 23rd Annual Pops by the Sea concert by Truro artist Jon Friedman.
The review committee for this year’s Comcast Student Art Contest included Pam Algier, Rectrix Aerodrome Centers, Inc.; Francine Carbonneau, The Stove Place II; Bill Catania, Catania Hospitality; Ben Curtis, Coldwell Banker; Leslie Fishlock, Genevate Corporation; Marcia King, Barnstable County Assembly; David Munsell, Munsell Appraisal Services; Mary O'Keeffe, Comcast; and Matt Titus, Christmas Tree Shops.
The 23rd Annual TD Banknorth Pops by the Sea concert will be held from 5 to 7 pm on August 3, 2008 on the Hyannis Village Green. The event marks the only Cape Cod appearance of Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra with special guest conductor Henry Winkler. Proceeds generated by the concert support the programs of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.
