2010 TD Bank Pops by the Sea
Honorary Chair Clarke Buchanan
The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and the Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce were pleased to announce that Clarke Buchanan has been named Honorary Chair of the 25th Anniversary TD Bank Pops by the Sea concert. The annual concert features the only Cape Cod appearance of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and conductor Keith Lockhart.“As the founding organization of Pops by the Sea, it has been our privilege and pleasure each year to select an Honorary Chair of Pops by the Sea,” said Deborah Converse, President and CEO of the Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce. “Clarke has contributed so much to the Cape Cod business community as the Co-owner and Manager of Sam Diego’s Mexican Cookery & Bar, as a Board Member of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and as on one of our region’s major employers. He is admired for his leadership, his integrity and his commitment to his employees and their families. He is such an asset to the Hyannis area community and we are thrilled to be able to honor him in this way.”
“Clarke is a perfect selection for the Honorary Chair of the 25th Anniversary TD Bank Pops by the Sea. Clarke has been an enormous contributor to the success of this event for many years, both as a member of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod’s Pops by the Sea Steering Committee, and as a valued member of our Board of Directors. He has done a great deal to raise awareness among his colleagues in the hospitality community of the region’s largest annual cultural event,” said Margaret Van Sciver, Board President of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. “Clarke is an integral member of our leadership team as well as a creative and accomplished artist, and we are thrilled to add him to the roster of distinguished Pops by the Sea honorary chairpersons.”
Mr. Buchanan has been a co-owner of Sam Diego’s Mexican Cookery and Bar in Hyannis since 1982 (and its sister restaurant in Plymouth since 1996). In this capacity he employs a staff of more than 170 employees, some of whom have worked with him for more than twenty years. Clarke has served as co-chair of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod’s community grants committee for several years and is an active member of other arts affinity groups including the American Association of Woodturners and the Cape Cod Association of Woodturners. Clarke is also a Past President of the Indian Lakes Homeowners Association where he continues to serve as an officer.
Clarke has been creating furniture, cabinetry, clocks and more from wood since the 1980’s. Since 2004, he has focused his creativity on woodturning, utilizing mostly sections of locally discarded trees that have been removed because they are a danger to people or property or have fallen in storms. He calls this material “Urban Wood” and has most recently exhibited his work at the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod’s regional shows: When We Were Younger and First Things First and at the Centerville Historical Museum’s exhibit: Born of Branches, Works in Wood.
Prior to moving to Cape Cod, Clarke consulted for restaurants and launched successful dining establishments in Denver, Colorado and Trinidad, Colorado and Austin, Texas. Clarke is the proud father of Larry, Dillon and Samantha and grandfather of Heather, Brad and Daryn. Mr. Buchanan resides in Marstons Mills with his wife, Karen and their chocolate Labrador, Coco.
