About Me
“I am very fortunate to have studied drawing and painting under the tutelage of Oliver Balf and Paul Scott (each now deceased), who were themselves students of Hans Hofmann.” Richard Pawlak was born in Chelsea, MA. He attended New England School of Art in Boston and graduated Montserrat School of Art.
His marsh series Southcape Escapes and Marshbirds express an affinity for the marsh that began in his boyhood years living in a housing project which bordered the marshes of Chelsea Creek on the edge of the city. It was there in the safe solitude and wonderment of the remnant marsh, that his love love of the marsh and it’s inhabitants grew and thrived. These series speak to a hopeful or “light” side of life struggles.
For the past 27 years Pawlak has been working in the Boston area as an artist for the building trades. Some of his skills include: hand lettering, gilding, artisan plaster and glazing, as well as historic restoration. A few of his notable projects include; Ritz Carlton Boston Common, Harvard University, Harvard Law School, Harvard Business School,
Massachusetts State House, Boston Public Library, Brown University, Emanuel College Chapel, Hermes Boston, Saks Boston, Nieman Marcus Natick, Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory of Music, among others.
Pawlak has developed a mastery of many mediums and approaches in order to achieve his end result. He has had the good fortune of learning under proficient and exacting mentors. Intellectual, emotional and instinctive elements have combined for the emergence of a growing body of work.
His paintings have been on display in galleries on Cape Cod, in Boston and Chelsea.
His paintings also are a part of many private collections.
Richard and his wife Jan live in Mashpee. They have two children, Jesse and Hannah, and a granddaughter, Aliyah.
