About Our Organization

Housed in the historic Brooks Academy, the Harwich Historical Society collects, preserves, and presents the history of Harwich. This summer, the Society celebrates the 150th anniversary of famed artist Charles D. Cahoon with a major exhibition of his paintings and several related programs. Please visit www.charlesdcahoon.org for more information.

Our Mission

The Society collects preserves, and presents the history of Harwich through exhibitions, education programs, active collecting, and research.

Our History

Beginning in 1953, a small group of residents interested in saving Harwich heritage met at Brooks Free Library to begin the work of collecting and preserving articles of historic interest, providing a suitable place to house these articles, and marking the places of historic interest in the town of Harwich. In the 50-plus years since, the Society has found a permanent home at Brooks Academy Museum, a former school built in 1844. Its collection includes thousands of artifacts, documents, and photos and its membership has grown to over 300.

Our Services and Programs

Housed in Brooks Academy, a historic schoolhouse and significant town landmark, the Society sponsors permanent and changing exhibits and a research library. Of note is the cranberry culture exhibit, featuring the most extensive display of artifacts and photographs chronicling the industry on Cape Cod.

There are also a dozen public programs annually, including lectures on historic topics, specialty tours, and education programs for children. Partnerships promote the area’s heritage through events like the Cape Cod Maritime Days and the new weekly farmers’ markets.

Fees Charged

$3 for adults; free for kids to 18.

Hours/Schedule

The Museum is open from June through Columbus Day Weekend in October on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. Tours can also be arranged by appointment year-round. The research library is open year-round by appointment.
