Our Mission
The mission of the Sandwich Glass Museum and the Sandwich Historical Society, Inc., is to promote a broad understanding and appreciation of Sandwich town history, with particular emphasis on the unique contribution of the glass industry to the local community, the region, the nation, and the world.
Our History
The Sandwich Historical Society was founded in 1907, when a group of concerned citizens came together to begin to collect, preserve and exhibit the history and material culture of the town of Sandwich. In 1923-4 they bought a building, had it moved to the corner of Tupper and Main Street, and renovated it. In 1925 the Society held its first glass exhibit to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company in 1825. From this point on the building became popularly known as the Sandwich Glass Museum. Over the years the museum as grown, added new wings for additional gallery space, and in 1985 a new Lobby and Museum Shop was opened to welcome the community and the museums’ many visitors. Today the museum now offers a hot glass furnace with live glass blowing demonstrations daily, a new theater with a continuous presentation about the first 200 years of the town’s history, and a new Museum Shop.
