About Our Organization
The Atwood House Museum is comprised of the 1752 Atwood House along with modern exhibition space. The museum has something to offer all ages. Yearly programming includes lectures, summer children’s workshops, and an annual antiques show and sale in September.
Our Mission
The mission of the Chatham Historical Society is to inform and educate present and future generations about the history of Chatham and vicinity by collecting and preserving records of earlier generations and by exhibiting and interpreting art, artifacts, archives and places of historical interest.
Our History
The Atwood House, built in 1752 by Captain Joseph Atwood, has been preserved in it’s original state and reflects life in the 18th and 19th centuries. Attached to the original house are eight galleries, featuring portraits and stories of 19th century mariners, a China Trade Collection, the Maritime Gallery, Fishing Gallery, Antique Tool Gallery, the Joseph C. Lincoln Gallery, the famous Stallknecht murals depicting local residents of the mid-twentieth century and a special exhibit gallery. On the grounds are a North Beach camp built in 1945 and one of the famous Chatham Twin Lights that operates when the museum is open.
